Groundhog Day! This is a movie I've never seen from start to finish. It's one of those movies I catch on cable and I watch either the beginning, the middle, or the end. I've probably seen the whole movie, just not from beginning to end. I know it is a beloved movie of the Wright family, so I know I need to just watch the whole thing some day. I picked it for last week's Sunday's With Sue because, last weekend I caught the ending of the movie.
So, Matt got it first! Don't get too excited. After I posted the second quote, he changed his mind to Stand By Me. So, sorry Matt. Even though you were the first to guess Groundhog Day, it doesn't count because you changed your mind. So, who guessed Groundhog Day next and stuck to it? It was Dan! You did it again Dan! Amy guessed next, then Dad! Dad told me that it hit him right when his alarm clock went off at 4:20am. Funny what your mind thinks of that early in the morning. (I've had a recent morning where my brain was thinking all sorts of weird stuff. If you don't know what I'm talking about go to www.voterydman.blogspot.com) Emily guessed next. And Haley thought it was Tommy Boy.
Here is this week's movie quote:
When I was your age, television was called books.

I suck.
Ok... Wait a sec. THAT is lame. Especially since after I sent that and heard the next quote I totally knew it was Groundhog Day, but never said anything.
You know what else is lame? Muskrat Love. Get it off! For the love!!
Hey Matt I love it. Just Kidding. I put it on there to laugh when I listened to it. The muskrat noises are too funny.
Yeah, I laughed at that point too.
Muskrat Love gets paused very fast when I am on the blog. I'm glad you are proud of your winning status Jeanine, I got a little nervous after a few days posting it and not hearing from you.
Did I miss a friday hint for the last movie? Matt's comment makes me think so. I was so slow because I didn't give the 2nd quote a few minutes of reflection until a few days later. I knew it was familiar, but didn't bother to cruise through the fog for more then 1 second. The minute I gave it a little brain work, I got it. Dan's breathing down your neck Matt and coming at my heels. We need to bring it!
Groundhog Day is one of my all-time favorites and a film that raises wonderful philosophical questions about the superiority of time over eternity and relationality over solipcism--plus it's just dang fun.
Sorry to take the sneak victory over you, Matt!
And, yah, both of you: you'd better bring it! (Now I just hope Sue will feature more movies I know!)
Oh yeah, on the songs: Congrats, Jaybabe, but Em I vote for the noise to stop soon!
And what about a new tradition for winners of the Sundays with Sue contests: Four of their actual favorites play during that week? Let me know and I'll send a list along (and I promise not too much Coldplay)!
Another, oh yeah. How you likey my picture? I just added it to my profile. It's from the year or so before I moved in with you guys....
Haha! Me likey.
Favorite songs playing for the week is an interesting idea. I'm on board. None of my picks will ever be Dancing Queen.
My w.v. is aughth.....that is what I yell when Copacabana comes on. Aughth!!!! And I like Barry Manalow, all his songs except Copa.. kinda like the idea of four or five songs from each winner or something, but whatever you do get Neaners off the automatic play list. Aughth.... Nice pic, Dan.
What the bip is "solipcism"?? Dumb it down a little, Dan.
Sorry Em, I was in Denver so I didn't log in for a couple of days. It was nice to get away. I do have some cool music on my ipod too. LOL. The playlist idea is great when it isn't annoying like those particular songs. I won't get tired of Dancing Queen cuz I love ABBA and Mama Mia:)
Love the pic bro! I remember you skinny with long hair. You were so young! Fun to look back.
I hope I can figure out one of these movies again soon. I am stumped so far.
I love Groundhog Day, too. I didn't recognize the first comment, but got it on the second. Your picture takes me back a few years, Dan. Nice. And Dad, when you thought of the movie at 4:20 am, did your clock radio happen to be playing "I got you babe"?
So I hope no one thinks it was mean of me to take Matt's win away. Matt orginally sent me a message on Myspace that said "Groundhog Day". Then He started sending me text messages. Here are what the text messages said:
Text #1- Wait.... I was thinking it was groundhog day, but it could be stand by me or maybe even footloose. All have a chicken scene. (that message cracked me up)
Text #2- I'm now really feeling stand by me. Need a hint!
Text #3- That sounds like Richard Dryfus to me. I'm goin with stand by me.
Text #4- Ghost adventures marathon! (oh wait, that one didn't have anything to do with SWS).
Text #3 sure sounds like he changed his guess to me!
I did not do a Friday hint. I don't always do them. Would you guys rather me always do one? Friday was kind of busy.
And Matt, what does a chicken scene have to do with the quotes I posted?
Wasn't the first quote "I think he is going to swerve first"? Chicken scene makes a lot of sense to me.
I don't think you are being mean. There is still a little confusion there, but I think it is clear that he definitely changed his answer to stand by me. Is Dryfus in that movie?
Amy I thought of that too! I also repressed a "4:20" joke.
Let's roll with Dan's song choice idea, therefore, I would like you all to send me some favorite songs (perhaps 6-8 or so) this week, so I can have your playlist ready when you win. Otherwise, it will take some days to get it all set up and you may as well enjoy the full week of your favorite tunes filling the family blog and reminding us all that we suck.
I won't have to send you any songs. Richard Dreyfuss is the guy writing the story in the movie, isn't he? Doesn't he narrate it as well.
And it just hit me about the chicken scene stuff. Matt meant the car game where two cars drive at eachother. I was thinking of scenes with actual chickens! hahahah!
Oh yeah, i think you're right about Dryfus.
That's kind of sad, I didn't think of that. Maybe some week you can stump us all and rule the blog. I also don't think you need to do a friday hint every time. Some weeks when it is friday and the crickets are chirping, one is called for.
I vote for friday hint all the time! I pretty much always need one! And I also like it to confirm my guess if I am right, which is not very often. Man, I could totally picture Chris Farley saying those lines! Sheesh. I thought of the "I Got You Babe" thing as well, haha.
Sorry on the solipcism term, George. Basically it is the philosophical position that you are really the only person that exists--that others and the outside world are simply illusions created by your own mind. In the context of Groundhog Day, the Bill Murray character ends up going in that direction for a while as he continually tries to kill himself (regardless of his also taking anyone else with him). His triumph is when he finally commits to be in actual relationships with the people around him (helping everyone in town for the sake of helping them and finally really caring for the Andie McDowell character rather than just entertaining himself by trying to seduce her).
Anyway, great film!
No clue yet on this week's but I've sent Emily a list of songs, so prepare yourself for some most excellent tunes soon! (They're so dang good, you'll all secretly want me to win every week--or at least will be entertained by everyone ripping on them.)
Can't wait! Last night, I ran last week's clues by Scott, just to see if he could guess. He also said, "Footloose"! (That scene on the canal road also ran through my mind when I first read the quote). Kindof interesting.) He knew it was a "chicken" scene, too. Glad you figured that out, Sue! Funny images must have run through your mind for a while.
I thought about the Footloose chicken scene, too, but then I remembered we'd done that movie not long ago. Couldn't think of another chicken scene until the Wednesday clue about how much work goes into planning the perfect day and then knew it immediately.
Yeah but we have already done Footloose people!! Haha.
Mmmmm... Chili Peppers...
You're right, Dryfus plays grown up Gordy in Stand By Me. He is in the beginning and end and narrates the whole thing. I had forgotten we already did Footloose. I can't believe I changed my answer! So dumb! I love Groundhog Day. I have seen it so many times it's crazy. If I remember right the first time I saw it was at Springville drive-in with Em and Cath and friends. It's one of those movies that makes me think. Like, I would totally steal a Viper and drive through some beautiful canyon really fast. There is a thinking movie of mine for you Pops!
I watched School Ties by myself last week, then again with Amy, B, Kelly, and Annie. SO GOOD! (Thinking movie as well) I will also go with, hmmm... American History X, The Prestige, Supersize Me!, A Beautiful Mind, HCB (my highschool skate movie!) and that's it for now.
I thought of Footloose first too, but then remembered we'd already done it. I am so getting ready to send in some songs, I've got this one in the bag! If I wasn't too late, of course.
I just watched Stand By Me last Friday! It was on T.V. I haven't seen that movie since I was a teen, I'm sure. It was great. I didn't even freak out about the barf-o-rama. I steeled myself because I remember how fake it was. Still gross, but I'm getting much better!
HCB a thinking movie?? hahahaha No way, Matt. The only thinking in that movie is how did you keep from killing yourself and your buds in that wreak of an Oldsmoble or not break a leg skateboarding or not getting shot by someone you were herassing in the Mall. Hahaha, you are a card, Matt. Try again. Your other movies are fine.
Sue: do we just send you a list of our songs? That means you have to find them and download them or whatever. Nice, but a lot for you to do. Anyother way to do it?
You got me Dad. Ok. Not so much a thinking movie to anyone but me. After I watch it I think about all of the things you mentioned, plus: What would have happened to me if I pursued filming pro skate boarders and moved to California instead of moving to Wyoming and going on a mission and then meeting B? And I also think about my friends that are in it and what they are all doing with their lives...
Matt HCB totally counts as a thinking movie when you give your explanation. I used to have a copy, but I loaned it to Cam's nephew and never got it back. Just think if you never met B, she would probably have a mullet right now.
Dad, send your music list to Em, she is the one handling that part. Can't wait to see your list! Em, I will send you a list, because if I do stump everyone than I am the winner!
Hey! I resent that mullet comment!! I would probably have a tattoo and be married to Tyler Huff, but no mullet!! HAHAHA! Matt has saved my life. Oh man. Life would suck if he hadn't been wearing a Modest Mouse shirt and I hadn't told him I liked it!
Haha. Good one Sue! And B's wright, what if I didn't wear that Modest Mouse shirt that day you know?? So weird to think about the what if's.
I ran into one of your nephews friends at a skate park in salt lake, he approached me and said, "are you the kid in HCB?! That is my favorite skate video!" It almost knocked me on my butt! I wish I could find the original digital copy of that vid. Something happened to it while on my mission and we can't find it anywhere. Sad. It could be on DVD for endless duplication, but now I only have a few precious VHS hud quality copies left.
"Inbetween the cover of another perfect wonder and it's so white as snow...."
YESSSS!! TASTY SONG PIC DAN!!
Five for fighting... not so much. Sorry. haha.
Darn on your DVD original, Matt! Would have loved to have one of those endless duplicates it could have led to. Hope to catch it on VHS one of the next times we see you!
Glad you like the RHCP song pick. One of many gotta-kick-my-drug-habit songs that I like. I know Sue likes one of the others: Neil Young's "Needle and the Damage Done."
I love the FFF song for the line in which he reveals the secret to the riddle: I love you free. It is also really well put together with an final verse that hearkens back and picks up almost all the pieces of earlier verses. He's an amazing lyricist. Is it his sound that you don't like? Do you like his "100 Years," "World," or "Superman"?
Hopefully the Mini DV master will show up one day. It's gotta be somewhere, no one throws stuff like that away... well...
Yeah, its the sound of FFF that kinda gets to me. Can't explain it, but I just don't feel it. Music has to be so different and crazy for me to like it now... It's kinda lame. I used to love everything, but I've really gotten sick of the same old sound all the time. Don't get me wrong, I feel like I am much more open minded to music than most people, but man, Its gotta be cool. And I KNOW what's cool. haha! Kidding.
Oh, and what's this about a Neil Young song? I don't see it on the list? I sure do love Neil as well. So do Em and Cath.
It's good to see the preying mantis poking his little triangle head around the blog these days! Hee hee.
Good to hear back from you LL Cool Matt. I can see what you're saying about interesting sound, for sure. FFF songs do all sound alike! And it is the sound of the Snow song that I dig even more than the fascinating lyrics. But for me songs that last in my playlists are usually pretty interesting lyrics- wise--the more confusion and angst the better. (Case in point: one of the others I'd sent to Em for possible inclusion is Counting Crows "Round Here.")
You don't know Needle and the Damage Done? Great little song, Neil's the master. It's simple and succinct.
i need a wed hint dang it. Every movie I think this is, we've already done.
That's funny that one of Jordan's friends recognized you Matt. Who is Tyler Huff?
Okay, here it the Wednesday hint:
Grab the thing and the other thing.
Grab the thing and the other thing! Sounds like David Carridine's last words..... oh, sorry B...couldn't resist it.
Tyler Huff is a boy that lived in Lander and got back from his mission about the time Matt did. He has an unusual personality.
Unusual personality doesn't even begin to cover Tyler. We will tell you stories Sue. Did you watch Haley and Marcus' wedding video? He is the one dipping lemons and shrimp into the chocolate fountain at the Riverton reception. He was completely in love with me (and I think his parents were beginning to think I was "the one"). He was a good friend who lived in Lander, and we both went to the student branch for church, so he would give me rides everywhere, and we would watch movies until late at night at his house. But I was completely enamored with Matt, and he is insane, so it didn't work out.
Tyler Huff...words cannot even begin to describe....haha. He's just crazy. I believe that I finally got this week's right! Here comes Haley's playlist everybody! Unless Cat (or someone else) beat me to the punch.
I am totally stumped people. Hope u win Haley. I am liking the playlist. I do like FFF and of course Beatles, Let it Be. It's got to be one of the best songs they sang. The words are poignant and important for us all to remember.
I'm stumped on this one, too. Go Cat or Haley! Actually, go anyone but Em, Matt, and Moses!
[Ha Ha--nothing personal nor a comment on what music might be playing next week. It's just that competitive Dan looking at the current standings is emerging from the shadows! Or perhaps he was never really all that hidden, eh?]
Don't worry Dan, i am sure i have this one, but through a series of stupid events I could have gotten this movie Sun night, but instead got it yesterday. I know Cat beat me and possibly more that are keeping quiet.
I don't remember if I sent mine on Sunday or Monday...but I got it. Love this movie! I don't know if I beat Cat or Hales. But, I sent my music list to Ems just in case...so watch out!
Oh, I totally got it monday morning on the first clue. Don't know if it was quick enough though...
Thanks for the Mantis shout out Hales, your too kind.
Dang it. I'm still hoping for a Friday clue tomorrow. The quotes feel really familiar but I'm still not honing in. Way to go everyone else, and I'm glad you are all having fun thinking about your song lists, etc. I sent Em about twelve choices, so hopefully I'll have a chance to expose you all to some more awesome tunage in a future week.
Tunage, haha that is such a Dan word!! Man, I sent mine on Monday, I think I got beat. Dang. And is it preying or praying mantis???
I think it's praying mantis. I'll do a friday hint. It's funny reading how everyone thinks they might have been the first one to get it (except Em, hee hee). Only I know who got it first!! bwahaha!
It's totally praying mantis because of their arms.
It's praying because they look like they're praying, and I know I got it (for once, yay!), but I don't know if I beat anyone except Em.
I thought it was praying because of their arms, but then I thought it might be "prey"-ing because they attack other things. Haha.
Don't they attack their mates?
Does the female eat the male after sex?
Yep the female does eat the male after sex. Hopefully he enjoyed it. LOL. I thought it was preying too. I am interested to see what this movie is.
Yes it does and I just witnessed it tonight on Animal Planet. The female eats the males head while they are still, ahem, mating and they keep going for an hour!! With his head eaten off! Its gross. B is gonna love this conversation...
That information is just plain sick! Insect stuff is so weird. Random fact: Did you know that the total weight of all the living termites in the world is heavier than the total weight of all the living humans in the world? Wrap your head around that!
Dad, I meant to say that David Carradine joke made me laugh so hard! Poor guy. Made some great movies in his life, Kill Bill being my favorites, and now everyone is going to remember him by how he died.
Anyway, here is the Friday clue on Saturday morning:
You keep saying that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
my verification word is scoutter!
Ah, Scoutter. I like Scout. She needs to feel better.
That's a shame about Carradine, just not the way one wants to be found (a little undignified).
I am still upset I messed up this week's SWS when I knew it! Arg.
That termite thing blew my mind.
Now I think I figured the movie out! Did u all watch Adam Lambert on 20/20 last night? Good he came out...it was so obvious. He will have an awesome album.
The termite trivia was wild! Where did u read that G?
I heard the termite trivia on the radio about a year ago. There must be millions of termites in those nests in Africa and in the rainforests. Even with that it don't seem possible.
Glad you got a laugh out of my little Carridine joke, Sue. Sick stuff, but it does give new meaning to Kung foo.
Yes, that was quite the Kung Fu move he went out on. I can just picture his spirit as it's leaving his body looking down and saying "NO! Give me a few more minutes to get out of this position!"
Wright on, Sue! I emailed you my guess on this weeks movie. Seems like all the parties got it. yeah! Do you know that Matt is in Utah?
Indeed I am. I'm havin a good time. Em and Rob are great hosts. I got some work down here- a wedding to film and a documentary revision to do for that band. Also, Scout's birthday! And one of Cath and I's favorite musicians, Conor Oberst, is playing in Salt Lake!! I played Hearts with Dave Law's family last night... I will just say it isn't the same without you guys! When I shot the moon, I was on my last card and looked around and some people still had 2 cards in there hand!! AAAHHH!! Pay attention people!!
Hahaha, Matt. That will teach you not to play with casual heart players. How are the Laws? We are going to miss you at the Phisters for dinner and fun. The house will be kinda vacant with Amy, Annie, Kelly and probabally Kyle gone. Hope they are having fun in SoUt. Sure they are. We had a nice rain storm last night.
I am going to miss Meat Loaf when Dan's tunes get sacked for the new winner.
Your comment made me laugh Sue. His spirit going, "NO! Wait!"
We had torrential rain twice yesterday (the first one starting as Rob and Dale were at their 3rd hole at Cedar Hills Golf Course) Matt and I and Scout watched the storm through the office window expecting them to get home any minute a sogging mess. They didn't disappoint.
Speaking of my little Pukey McWaterpoop, she hasn't had either symptom for over 24 hours, starting immediately after a sweet little blessing given to her by her dad and Matt and Grandpa following a particularly rough morning. I am so cheered, watching her suffer yesterday worse then it's been yet (after a week and a half!) almost made me unravel. So yay! I really think she is nearing the end. I really wanted her back 100% for her birthday.
Dad, I am sorry to say that Radiohead won't be filling the void left behind by Meatoaf. Maybe next time.
Emily, did Miss McWaterpoop get all over her symptioms? I haven't heard. I am really only making a comment to get to the 70 milestone. hahahaha am interested in Scout and her health.
