Sunday's With Sue

Du dum, du dum, du dum, dudum, dudum dudum! JAWS! To me, by far, the scariest movie of all time. Actually, I watched a show once that counted down the top 100 scariest movies of all time and Jaws was #1. Scared me so bad as a kid that for years bathtubs and swimming pools scared me, to this day lakes kind of scare me, and I still won't go in the ocean. A couple of years after this movie came out Dad took me deep sea fishing with a couple of his friends for some reason. I was pretty scared, but was trying to be brave. All of a sudden a grey fin came out of the water, not far from our boat, and I fainted! As I fell, I knocked over the bucket of our bait, which was a bunch of small fish, and I woke up with fish all over me. Turns out it was a dolphin, or a porpoise, whatever it was I don't care! It scared the crap out of me! That is the one and only time I've ever just fainted! Do you remember that Dad? Jaws is to me what Pet Sematary is to Matt.

Anyway, Matt got it first! Then Cat, then Dad, and that was it! Well, I guess I could say cousin Dan got it 4th. Haha! Have you guys read his comment on the last Sunday's with Sue? I guess we should explain the rules to him! Good to know he reads our blog sometimes! Way to go Matt! Em should be getting nervous, you're catching up.

Here is this week's movie quote:

Hey I like that hat! Do they sell men's clothes where you got that?

I am nervous! By the way, I have not seen Jaws since I was a kid, probably 6 or 7. I am quite unfamiliar with it, but I do still find it scary and can get scared in a swimming pool if I think of it. I guess I suck. My pregnant brain is definately getting worse, perhaps I can blame my recent slippage on that. I have done some pretty dumb things while serving the last few weeks. Serving is not for pregnant people.

Oh man, that seriously is the scariest movie ever. I hate sharks, they are seriously in my top three worst fears. I can't believe I didn't get it! Marcus just read the quote and totally knew it right away, I keep telling him he should join our game! Haha. Maybe he will sometime. Good job Matt!

Haley said...

Ooh, I can blame my guessing lameness on pregnancy as well, except it's not much different when I'm not.....

Hahaha my word verification is ratersu. Is that some beagle named Sue? No, I don't remember you fainting, Sue on the boat. I must have been watching out for really scary things like Moby Dick. Now a white sperm whale would really knock me out if I saw one. I love sharks and would love to go to the grand Caymans and dive at the place they call Sting-ray city. Diving with all the sting-rays and white tail sharks would be so cool. Maybe in the next life. Nice posting, sue. You always are so discriptive and interesting. "the best"!!

Haha, I loved Dan's comment. I saw this movie when I was about 6 or 7, and stopped taking baths. I literally did not ever take a bath until about 2 years ago (bath beads/scrubs/confetti etc. are still a terrible present to give me). I also greatly improved in swimming lessons after this, because every time I swam over the deep end, I would speed up, and then I'd get afraid that there was a shark behind me and book it the rest of the way. I think I remember actually stopping in the middle of some laps, to check if I was being followed. I love swimming, but I cannot stand water that I can't see through. I definitely rate this a @#$%.

I was 12 when this movie came out & still living in San Diego which really made going to the beach the worst. I loved the beach! This movie messed me up for a long time. I remember showers being a terrifying experience. I actually pictured myself standing in one of those shark cages underwater and pictured Jaws crashing through the wall or drain of the shower. I was about 13 and in Mapleton at this time and showering in Mom & Dad's shower, I would start hyperventilating and i would literally keep jumping out of the shower I was so scared. I kept thinking, "This is so dumb! You are in Utah! There are no sharks! Get a grip!" Then I'd wash a little more shampoo out and it would happen again! Dang this movie!

Pops said...

Some people keep trying to tell us that there is no difference between boys and girls, men and women. Hahaha. What a crock! Sharks in the shower and in swimming pools. Sure. I can't believe you guys. Maybe if we were swimming in the ocean off the coast of South Africa I would look around a little or I would just say I don't feel like swimming thanks. But in Utah in the shower!!hahaha hehehe

Cat said...

Oh, yeah. Jaws ruined swimming pools, lakes, beach, baths and even toilets for me for a long time. It's a movie they play on cable every so often. I watch it everytime, the masochist that I am.

Dan W said...

Okay, what the heck ARE the rules?

I'm not wanting to horn in on your long-time competition with standings that get reported and all that, just curious....

You Wrights look like you have a great time with this blog. Congrats!

Haley said...

The only rule is that we email Sue with our answers so that nobody else sees the anwers. She posts a new one every Sunday, the first one to submit the right answer wins! Her email is camandsue2004@yahoo.com You are totally welcome to play with us, the more the merrier!

Haley said...

By the way, I totally relate to all of you are your fear of all things water after watching this movie! I still hyperventilate while swimming if I think about it. I feel that the shark is underneath me and I can't see it and I just can't swim fast enough! I hate it! So you guys should all be ashamed(especially dad) for literally dragging me into that STUPID shark tunnel thing at Sea World when I was like 6...and then again when I was like 13....

Amy said...

Oh Haley! You are so funny! Hey Dan, welcome to the blog. We would love to have you play along, except you'll probably beat us every week. I usually get it figured out on Saturday and don't submit a guess because I know I'm too late. I'm bad at this.

Cat said...

Dan, you're totally welcome! Come play with us, it's fun. I'm pretty bad at Sunday's with Sue.

Dan W said...

Thanks, all, for the invite and to the blog! Perhaps I'll give the game a try.... Since writing earlier, I've looked at a bunch of past Sundays with Sue and actually think I'll be pretty bad at this.... Just lucky knowing the first one I saw...

Cheers!

Pops said...

Welcome aboard, Dan. What's the name of Quints boat? haha entry question. The only other rule is to not critizise my spelling. It's snowing in Wyo. I'm now looking under each snowflake for little tiny sharks....you peeps are so funny about Jaws. I too, have to watch it on cable when it comes around. Love Robert Shaw and the "you need to get a bigger boat" quote from the Shairff (sp).

Dan W said...

Boat's name was Orca (the only known predator for a great white).

Full disclosure: I'm a cheater here, having looked that bit of trivia up online.

Also noticed it was 1975 not 77 that it came out, so I guess I was a sophmore. It was Star Wars that came out in 1977 when I was a senior. I do remember the theatre I saw both of them in. Do any of you past Chula Vistans remember the theatre next to Farrell's Ice Cream Parlor? Does anyone remember Farrell's? Any of those around anymore?

Hey, Sue, do you have a follow-up hint for this week's movie?

Emily said...

We get a hint quote on Wednesday, and if there are still a woeful amount of guesses after that, she may do one on Friday too.

This one is killing me! I know I know it- I am eagerly awaiting the hint quote. But I bet Matt has it already.

Dan W said...

Thanks, Em! Glad to have more info about how this works. I'm going crazy with this one, too. I know I've seen this movie....

Hey, while we're still on Jaws a bit, I have to tell you about meeting Bill Butler, the movie's cinematographer, last August. He was very cool, very down to earth. In his 80s I think now, but still very active working, telling us he'd just returned from Belgium where he'd been filming until just a day or two earlier.

The circumstances of the meeting were that I was on Paramount's lot for an acquisitions screening for a film Richard Dutcher made on spec called Evil Angel. It is a fun horror/sexy-serial-killer movie based on the Lilith legend (Adam's supposed first wife). Anyway, Butler was the DP on this film and we (a few friends and I who also made the road trip) had a fun five minutes of chatting. We mentioned Jaws as we talked but didn't ask too much on that. Mostly just listening to him talk about Richard as a director and also Bill's career a bit. (Richard has a Jaws poster that Bill has inscribed to him hanging on the wall of his offices, so I see that quite often.)

For all you JJ Abrams geeks (I noticed many of you are Lost fans), one other thing cool was that right in front of the Sherry Lansing theater where the screening of Evil Angel took place, folks were gathering for a party for Abrams. They were milling around with champagne and appetizer-type stuff before going into some other building on the lot near there for the real party. Anyway, Kevin Smith of Jay and Silent Bob fame came up to me (I was standing on the steps of the theater), shook my hand, and then and asked what was what. I was too shy to really do more than just tell him which was the Abrams party group. Tom Cruise, along with the two kids he and Nicole Kidman adopted, was there, too. I know how a few of you hate famous people, so I won't send you my photo of Tommy boy that's still in my cell phone (unless you ask).

As far as Evil Angel goes, all this came down just when the economy started tanking, so right now, Richard still hasn't sold the film. He's pretty depressed about it, as he'd hoped profits would fund another project that is now sort of floundering as he looks for dough. Angel actually is a really fun ride.... Hope it will see the light of day soon.

Cat said...

You met Kevin Smith? Nice!

Pops said...

Dan: Susie remembers Farrell's. She would have a mega hissy fit and cry jag every time we took her there because of the base drum and the noise when there was a birthday or someone ordered the pig out dish they served. We quite going there as a family because of her. Mom and I would have to sneek off at times for a little ceam ceam. By the way, Dan, we all agreed to not look up the movie quotes on the internet. Honor code stuff.

Sue said...

Dan didn't look the quote up on the internet, he looked up the name of the boat. I think that is okay. That is so cool you got to meet Kevin Smith!

Looking under snowflakes for sharks! Dad you are the funniest! And yes, I hated Farrells, sorry I ruined it for all you guys!

Dan W said...

I think their huge ice cream dish was The San Diego Zoo. Hadn't thought about Farrell's in years until just today and thinking about the theaters next door.

Hearing this about Farrell's and Sue along with all the Jaws hysteria confessions is fun stuff. Thanks, all, for the smiles.

Thanks, too, for the note on honor code about the quotes. Totally on board with that.

Hey Cat,

Kevin Smith seemed really cool and down to earth. Besides the brief encounter with him before the screening, when we got back to the parking lot afterward, I guess that Abrams party was over somewhat at the same time and Smith was leaning against a Cadillac Escalade chatting with someone just a few feet away from our car. He smiled and gave us a little hello wave. All in all, it was a fun road trip with our time at Paramount most excellent.

Don't know if all of you have seen Brigham City or not. As you may know, it was shot in Mapleton, so it's fun to see the town in it. Bill Butler told us that it was seeing that movie that made him think Richard was very talented and would be worth working with.

Amy said...

Farrell's was the best! I really loved the candy shop in the front by the cash register. Remember the crystal suckers? Fun times.

Sue said...

The candy shop was the best part of Farrells! We would go there when we were done so it meant we were leaving!

And by the way, Amy, I was also afraid of showers for many years and used to have to jump out like you did. I just didn't want to mention it in the posting, but since you fessed up, I should too!

And Dan, Richard Dutcher is the guy that makes the more "edgy" mormon movies right? He doesn't do the Singles Ward and Church Ball movies right?
Did you ever see Plan 10 from Outer Space that Trent Harris made? I saw it at the Tower theatre when it came out, hilarious!

Matt Wright said...

I laughed so hard in the middle of class today reading dads snowflake comment! HA HA!
I too had a serious freak out session at lake powell one day because of JAWS. I was floating in that gross green water, wating for the boat to come back for me, thinking about what people have said about how deep it is and everything. Well, I was looking down, and this exact picture (I believe it is the same one that is on the cover of the movie) came into my mind and I just flipped!! I kicked my leggs and hyperventilated for a minute. Then I got a grip and I was fine. Never really bothered me since. Even when Scuba diving.

I also add my welcome to Dan! I have enjoyed your comments so far. Can't wait for more!

Pops said...

Hey, Dan. Remember I was the one that got you Richard Dutcher's phone number when you wanted to invite him to a Sunstone event. He had just made "God's Army" and it was popular with the LDS folk.

Sue said...

Boy do you guys need a Wednesday hint! I've had 4 guesses. Let me rephrase that, 4 WRONG guesses! Dad and Amy both guessed the same wrong movie, that's pretty funny. I will say, I can see why these movies were guesses.

Here is the Wed hint, maybe this will help. If not, I'll do another one on Friday.

"We'd come out here, just a few of us, and when the train comes, we'd make out like crazy".

Emily said...

I have seen this movie recently!

Sue said...

Why would you do that?

Emily said...

huh?

Sue said...

Why would you watch this movie recently?

Emily said...

Do you mean Jaws? Cause I mean this weeks movie. The lines are fresh in my mind as something I have seen recently, but I still can't put my finger on it. I had the feeling with the hat quote, now even more so with the train one. If you are talking about this weeks movie I am REALLY confused as to why you wonder why I would have watched this lately.

Sue said...

Yes, I'm referring to this week's movie. I'm asking because this movie is LAME! And I was wondering why you would watch it when there is way better movies out there, that's all. Does that clear up the confusion?

Emily said...

Yes, I suppose that does clear it up a little. I don't know why I've seen it since I can't think of what it is still. Now I am wondering why you would put a lame movie on Sundays with Sue. I am intrigued.

Sue said...

Because I know it's a movie everyone who plays on the blog has seen. Maybe not B, but I would guess she probably has. But sometimes I'm just blown away by some of the things she hasn't seen or done. And for the record, I'm probably the only who thinks it's lame.

Dan W said...

Sorry to drop out of the conversation for a while.... Busy time with a work project.

Yep, Sue, that's Dutcher. His God's Army started the whole Mormon movie genre but he got pissed pretty quickly when films like Singles Ward and the RM started showing up, playing to lowest common denominator humor and LDS cliches. After God's Army, his next films Brigham City, States of Grace, and Falling got increasingly willing to take on tougher themes within Mormonism and the wider world of religion and spirituality. Happy to tell you more if you're thinking of renting something. And yes, LOVE Plan 10. What a hoot!

George, I DO remember your help in my first making contact with Richard. Thanks, so much! From those humble starts has grown a really neat friendship that eventually took Richard into the center of my larger circle of friends and the various study groups I was part of, etc. About three years ago, we formally coalesced a few of these into a group we call the High Council (twelve of us in it--and I have to admit a few of the lapsed Mormon-folk in the group get a bit "high" on alcohol in some of the meetings)that is a really important part of our lives, meeting monthly (this Friday for this month, in fact). Each month one of us shares our spiritual journey and Richard films it, and I will eventually edit them all and we'll put out a small-run collection of them; we also have two other essay collections we're all contributing to. Anyway, Richard has somewhat become an important center of the group as we usually have the meetings at his offices in Provo.

I just sent off a guess to Sue for this week's film (Lorri thinks she knows it--is that cheating? happy to drop out for this week if so--and if we're right, it IS a pretty lame movie but, as Sue says, it is one most everyone will very likely have seen....

Cat said...

I love this movie and I'm totally going to win this week. I got it one second after the Wednesday hint.

Sue said...

Then you should have sent it one second after the hint was posted Cat!

Cat said...

It's cheating to ask anyone if they know what it is!

Sue said...

I don't really care if Lorri helped Dan. I kind of assumed Rob helped Em and mom helped dad etc. Maybe we should have a vote.

Cat said...

Maybe I'm just a Nazi, but it seems like cheating!

Dan W said...

A Nazi who perhaps has a secret reason for remembering movie lines about making out like crazy whenever trains come by? Very interesting . . . [g]

Sorry to stir the pot... I will totally abide by whatever rules you guys vote in--and I really don't care if I win this week if I happened to be first in with my spouse-assisted guess.

Emily said...

I don't have trouble with spouse assisted guesses. It's very natural to read the quote and if he's handy and it seems familiar -to ask Rob what he thinks.
For the record, he has never been any help. (In other words, Rob is not the secret of my success.)

Sue said...

Em, why don't you do one of those poll things and see what everyone thinks about spouses helping. I think it is natural to ask your spouse like you said. I would be against asking co-workers and stopping people on the streets to see if they know.

Amy said...

I think spouse-help is ok--in fact, I should try it. I might do well with Scott's help! he's good at movie quotes. But, whatever.

Pops said...

Yeah, the movie is kinda lame, but the song is good. Sorry for the hint, but it must be over by now. No problem with asking spousal advice or kids or whatever with me that is. All the talk about Jaws chummed me up and I got my scuba gear and started putting it together and checking it out today. (day off) Yesterday I snowplowed for 10 hours at the airport and didn't even find one small tiny shark in all that tons of snow. How strange. I will confess that on occasion, I think of spiders while sitting on the commode.

Amy said...

ah yes, Arachniphobia. Another creepy one that stays with you

B said...

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Dad, that was the funniest thing EVER!!! I think spousal help is ok, except that Matt and I are the only couple with independent blog IDs, so I think that everyone but Matt and I can help each other. He normally just tells me if I've seen the movie or not, and that's not really a whole lot of help! See SWS Allstars.

Emily said...

Yo B- Rob and I have individual blog ids, but he doesn't even try for the reason I mentioned already.

B said...

Oh. Then it's funny that he commented on his blog under your user ID. I figured since he did that, he didn't have his own.

B said...

Never mind. I just went back to that comment, and it is under Rob. I'm tired, been up since 6:30.

Sue said...

I forgot to do another hint quote yesterday! Only a couple people have guesses it right, and I know more of you can get this. So here is another quote:

My daddy hates me wearing these boots.

Haley said...

I have no idea. None of those sound familiar at all.
