No one I know is involved in this film
This movie was recommended to me by Sue (before this blog) and it was the first time I had ever heard of it. That is not odd as I never watch TV anymore and when I do, I never ever see commercials, so movies can pass me by easily. Anyway Sue, I LOVED it!
It is about a guy that is kind of afraid of people, and orders a ahem..... sex doll from the internet, and falls in love with her. Now stay with me here, this is a remarkably clean film (pg 13), but I had to check and make sure it was even that as there is very little allusions to the sex doll aspect, they certainly could have gone that way and didn't (cheap jokes). Instead it is a very heart warming story. There wasn't any language either. Kinda nice.
Anyway he totally believes that this doll is a real person and talks to her and hears her talk to him back. The reactions of his brother and sister in law are priceless and so is the way the whole town rallies around him and "Bianca". They totally support him and invite Bianca to functions (without Lars even). The town actually grows to care for her for real, and of course there is also a gawky "real" girl that is in love with him and that actress does a fantastic job with that character (they all do, but she just reminded me of girls I have known before and I found her very believable).
So, if you are in the mood for a fairly quirky movie, with (I hate to use this term, but---) heart, (someone please give me a better term for that, it's late) check this one out. I think you will like it.

Yay! I'm so glad you took my advice and watched it and you liked it! Cam and I loved this movie. In fact, it was for sale for like $5 at Blockbuster the other day and we picked it up. I don't remember seeing any previews for it. I think I heard about it from the film critic on NPR, and thought it sounded right up my alley.
And I'm with you. I love the actor who played the girl who is in love with Lars. She is great! She was in another quirky movie I like called Thumbsucker, about a high school kid who still sucks his thumb. Keanu Reeves plays his dentist, and is awesome in it.
And don't you just love Lars! Ryan Gosling did such a great job with that character. (he's a mormon you know. Ryan Gosling, not Lars).
And the brother and sis-in-law do have a great reaction to all this. One of my favorite scenes is where the sis-in-law is giving Bianca a bath. Lars is nowhere around, but she is so into trying to make Bianca real, she bathes her!
I could go on, it is one of my favorite movies. It was nominated for a couple of Oscars. Best screenplay and something else. Watch it! It might turn in to a Wright Classic!
I didn't know he was mormon. I imdb'd him and I saw murder by Numbers and saw he is the lead in the notebook. I didn't see that one, but I read the book. Anyway, he did a great job as Lars, that couldn't have been an easy role to play. The sis in law was so great, she had such concern for Lars and she more then anyone supported him. My favorite was when Bianca was sick and she really had genuine panic, it was so funny.
Good review girls. You got me thinking I want to see this Lars movie. I remember reading a review in USA Today a year ago and they liked it, but it never came to the Wyoming theaters. I am going to go looking for a female vampire doll.
Yeah, he grew up Mormon. I've heard of Murder by Numbers, but haven't seen it. Haven't even heard of the Notebook. But he is in another independent film called Half Nelson that is supposed to be really good. I keep meaning to pick it up, but I forget. He plays a teacher who is either a recovering heroin addict, or a current heroin addict. He was nominated for an Oscar for that role. Maybe I'll rent it this weekend.
A female vampire doll? Dad, you are the funniest person I know. Please watch this movie. I really think Matt would like it too.
you have a crush on Alice or something dad?
I kind of have a crush on Alice.
Cat has a girl crush! Is Alice the little pixie haired one, or the more glamorous one?
Alice is the pixie-like one. I didn't care much for Rosalie, the blond.
I LOVE ALICE!!!
And I would just like to say that it is kinda creepy that grandpa wants a doll becuase of the nature of the other doll. Just saying.
I love Alice too, more then Bella in fact.
Well, Haley, grandpa is kinda creepy. You just didn't know it. And yes, Alice is the one. Little sidestepping dances and all...very nice talent for a vampire.
Creepy grandpa! HAHA! Haley, you should watch Lars and the Real Girl. It really has nothing to do with her being one of those kinds of dolls. It is a really sweet love story.
Will you loan this to me, Sue? Maybe you can bring it when we make cookies at Em's house in a couple weeks. I really want to see it.
Yes siree bob
Interesting. This blog entry somehow slipped right past me, but I was watching the DVD extra features on Juno, and they had the trailer for this movie on there. I watched it and loved it. B was in the other room and I said "There is a movie out that we need to see" she replied, "what is it?" and I said, "I don't know, somebody and the doll girl...or something" Then she had this know it all tone in her voice when she said, "Lars and the REAL girl?" Then she told me about this blog. So here I am. We will netflix it and maybe watch it with Mom and Dad one night or something.

Today, Scout called to me to come see Christmas. I thought, "this ought to be good" I went downstairs, and she had opened the back door and took me outside and pointed up at the sky. She said, "see?" sure enough, little snow flakes were falling. Now Scout thinks it is Christmas, and all Halloween thoughts have flitted from her head.
She is going to have a long wait...
