Sunday's With Sue 8/6/9

Sorry everyone! I meant to do this on Sunday, but I had to work, and when I got home, I kind of forgot. I was busy finishing the laundry and cleanup after the camping trip, (which was great and relaxing, by the way). So yesterday, Cam and I decided we needed to do some canning. We had 60 lbs of tomatoes from our garden! Yes, 60! I weighed them on our bathroom scale. Plus a bunch more cucumbers and hot peppers that needed to be dealt with right away. So, we did a batch of mom's tomato soup, a bunch of salsa and more pickles. My first batch of pickles turned out so good, we decided to do more. I was going to do the SWS post when we were finished canning. So Cam and I got the tomato soup and salsa done, and started on the pickles. Cam had to go to bed around 8pm, so he could leave for St. George at 3:30am, so I was going to finish up the pickles.

Anyway, this is funny. At 11pm last night I was just finishing up the pickles, I had a load of laundry to fold, then I was going to do the SWS post and go to bed. I had all the lids on the pickles, all I needed to do was shake them up a little and put them on the kitchen table. So I get to the very last jar, I shook it and cucumbers and pickle juice, etc went everywhere! I had put the lid on the jar, but not the screw ring thing! I guess I was so tired, I didn't notice. And when I say it went everywhere, I mean everywhere! All over the island, the fridge, the wall and, the load of freshly dried laundry was sitting in a basket by the couch in the living room and it even went through the opening to the kitchen into the laundry basket! This was a quart size jar, and we decided to do pickle chips this time, so there was a lot in that jar. I stood there and couldn't believe what happened. I looked around and all I could see were slices of cucumbers, garlic cloves, red pepper flakes, little flakes of dill and pools of vinegar and water. It took me about half an hour to clean up, I had to put the clothes back in the washer, and needless to say, when it was all over, doing the SWS post was the last thing on my mind.

Okay, on to the post. Hamlet! Probably my very favorite Shakespeare play, and a couple of movies have been done too. I picked a picture of Hamlet finding York's skull, because that is one of my favorite scenes. Alas, poor York! I really don't like the movies that much, but I figure most everyone has either seen the play or one of the movies, or so I thought. Dan is the only one who got it Wright! At first he thought it was LA Story, then he guessed Hamlet after the other quotes were posted. Haley guessed A Midsummer's Night Dream, then changed her guess to Romeo and Juliet and Matt guessed Dead Poet's Society. Emily sent me an official non-guess, which I thought was funny. So, way to go Dan! Get ready for some Dan jams this week!

Here is this week's movie quote:

You're a disgrace to depression.

Pickles everywhere. I love the concept and the visual image. Waytogo, Sue. I am proud of you doing that as well as all the canning you did. Very impressive!

Hamlet!! That is sure a wright classic. What the bip? as Matt would say. No wonder I had no clue last week. I was busy with Scott watching the BYU, Oklahoma game in Dallas anyway. Such fun and what a stadium. Neat stuff. This weeks SWS is a different matter. It feels like a movie we all have liked. 090909 tomorrow.

Thought I better do the playlist tonight, so Dan has a little more time with his playlist this week.
He wanted to give a nod to the Beatles this week for the mini Beatles revival stuff going on this week, but alas, this isn't possible. He wanted "In My Life".
Congrats, good job pinpointing the play. The lines were familiar, I couldn't attach it to any one play by the bard though.
Sorry about the pickles (even though I am giggling a bit), does that mean the seal was bad? Perhaps this was a fortuitous event that kept you two from a bad case of botulism down the road. A "swing away" if you will-- now name that movie!

All I gotta say is B is gonna freak when she sees the Cat Stevens song on the playlist. She is obsessed with him lately. She listens to the same ten songs at least 3 times a day driving to and from Lander. USING MY IPOD I have you know...

Woo hoo! Can't believe I won after the initial miss on LA Story. I thought for sure that was it, and I know it has that line in it, as well. (For those who don't know that film, it's an intelligent, mystical but fun Steve Martin flick--one of my favorites of his and about the only movie I've found Sarah Jessica Parker to be appealing in.) Anyway, I was 95 percent sure the first quote was from Shakespeare and just quoted in LA Story but when the next two clues were clearly the bard, I knew I wasn't on the right track. Luckily I knew the "thinking makes it so" line was from Hamlet and so sent Sue the follow-up guess.

Hope you'll enjoy the tunes this week. Maybe a couple of them (Mika and the Leonard Cohen one, and perhaps the Joan Osborne one) might not be too familiar and something maybe someone will end up liking. Fun that B is digging Cat Stevens these days, Matt, even if it means your iPod is being hijacked....

Your "swing away" clue, Em, is really familiar, as is the new SWS clue this week. Both of them have my mind churning but nothing yet....

Dan- Sue and Cat are big time Leonard Cohen fans.

Ah yes dad, 09/09/09 today. Let us all breathe a sigh of regret that it won't be Elinor's birthday. By the way, Rob has been curious about your little trip and how cool it was.

This week's movie quote is so totally familiar but not coming. The good news is that pregnancy brain is about to end. (No guarantees that post-pardom brain will be any better though for a while). I did manage to stay on top despite my 9 month handicap. Whoo hoo!

Pretty impressive Em. I think I still have post-partum brain X 5. No wins for a long time! You've never heard my awesome playlist!

Yeah Cat Stevens:) I have never heard of Leanard Cohen so it is good to be exposed to new stuff. Your canning story is interesting Sue. I would love to try some of the yummy salsa:) Can't believe u had so many tomatoes. Have a good rest of your week. Hang in the Em:)

Yes, the pickle story is pretty funny, now that it is over. It wasn't a bad seal Em, I forgot to screw the ring thing on. With this pickle recipe you don't need to do the water bath, you put the vinegar and water in the jar while it's boiling and as it cools you start hearing the little pops from the lids sealing.

Anyhoo, I love Leonard Cohen! I have at least one of his songs on the playlist on my blog. His album, The Future, would be on a top ten favorite album list of all time for me.

I'm going to do the hint quote tomorrow since this one has only been up one day.

Man, I have read and seen Hamlet but those quotes just weren't familiar to me. There are a lot of lines in Shakespeare plays. Good job Dan!
WV is "forciest" ???

Here is your next quote:

Person #1- Do you want to dance?

Person #2- I've been thinking about that for a while.

Person #1- Well?

Person #2- No.

Hmm... I'm still pretty confident in my guess. Yet, it is just a guess.

AAAARGGGGGGGGGGGGGG! I am KICKING myself for not getting this movie the second I read the first quote. I will always feel the burning shame of not getting it until Friday. In my defense, my week has been distracting to say the least. That doesn't ease my pain much though.

Slam Dunk on the movie. Everyone should have gotten it by now. Good choice, Sue.

Mom and I went to see Julia and Julie last night. We havent been to a movie in a long time. I was very supprised that I like it so much. Really a cute, neat picture and very interesting about Julia Child and her start in France as a cook. The whole thing just came together very well and Amy Adams and her husband were great. Meryl
Streep was absolutely perfect as Julia Childs. Streep is truly a marvel as an actress. Three and a half stars. Well worth seeing. Perhaps I am liking it so much because there has been mostly hud sauces showing lately.

Some of us are still frustrated they haven't gotten this week's flick yet! Know that I've seen it but still blanking! Ugh!

We liked J&J, too! As you say, fascinating story of all she went through to train in French cooking and get the book published--and neat to learn a ton about food in the process. Agree MS is amazing in this. The Julie half of the story was also good but not nearly as compelling. Still love AA as an actress... Agree that the flick is about 3.5 stars AND that pretty much everything the past month or so has been quite HUDDY.

Amy said...

Glad you liked the movie. I'm surprised, too, Dad since you said you could never stand to watch Julia Child when she was on TV. I guess I am one of the few who still has no idea with this new movie quote!

Sue said...

I want to see that movie too. I will most likely just Netflix it. Doesn't seem like a must see in the theater movie.

I'm going to do a quote today for the people who haven't gotten the movie yet. Here it is:

Must try other people's clean silverware as part of the fun of dining out.
