Baby girl names!

Photo courtesy of Miriam Lovell Photography, who takes AMAZING photos. I'm in love with her blog. miriamlovell.blogspot.com

Em, I am going to take a stab at helping you choose a name, but mainly it's just going to be entertaining, as my family all submitted sci-fi sounding names, (my mom always wanted to name one of us Fiona Guinevere) and ones I know you would hate. I sent a text out to my sisters and mom, Amy and the girls, Sue, Cath, and some friends with good taste. Thankfully, not too many completely made up ones. So here goes, in alphabetical order.

Wow! There's only about 4 or 5 on here that I like. Good luck Em and Rob! Naming a baby is so hard. But once you do, it seems so obvious.

Emily said...

Thanks B!

I've actually considered Fiona. I also kind of like Olivia and a name that isn't on here- Marina- like our German exchange student when I was a little girl. I always thought it sounded pretty and a little exotic.
I have brought none of these names up with Rob yet. There was a little girl in our last ward named River. Her parents were a little hippie-ish and very nice.

Pops said...

I do like McKenna, Ellie and Kate. Most of the other pretty much suck....except Bronwyn of course. I didn't mean suck...just don't have that certain ring to it like Enema does. hehehe

Matt Wright said...

HAHA Dad! Those names at the end really are pretty sounding if you think about it. Too bad they all make your mind go to places you wish it hadn't. I like Marina I guess. Just don't take Lucy. Thats like the only name for a girl that I have KINDOF approved if we have a girl. I can't stand thinking about it seriously.

I always thought it was mean of parents to name their children very weird names. I do like Kate and McKenna like Pops also Addison even though it is a bit yuppish (sp?). Renee was almost Madison but Sharon vetoed it last minute. Good Luck. It is a difficult decision but fun to do.
My word is Kessa. How about that for weird name?

Emily said...

I don't like McKenna but Kate's pretty cute. My friend Amy Hart (Anderson) named her little girl Ellie (Elenore) so that would be weird to go with that one even though I really like it.
I won't take Lucy, I actually like the name, but have a friend named Lucy and it would also be weird to name a baby that. All my work friends would think it was after Lucy, also now I know you guys may have a Luce no way will I take it.

Any suggestions if I would like to stick to a literary theme with my kids? My name is Emily Jane, which is Emily Bronte's name and Scout is Scout, so can any of you peeps come up with a nice heroine you like from a good book?

ajmah said...

Okay, I have two reasons to comment here...

First and foremost: Emily, I don't think it would be weird at all if you named a little girl Ellie or Eleanor or whatever. I think it would be great actually. It is, in fact, a wonderful name. So, go ahead with my blessing (not that you needed it).

Second, I just have to ask how B knows about Miriam Lovell photography? This was actually the third blog I checked this evening, and the first two were Minna's (aka Miriam Lovell) family blog and her photo blog. It was weird to come to your blog and see a paragraph about her. I did a double take to make sure I was on the right page.

Ami

PS- I hope you don't mind that I commented on your family's blog.

How about Dagny, Ems. I loved her in Ann Rands "Atlas Shrugged" Or perhaps, Alafair. She has been a character in James Lee Burke novels (a daughter with a three legged racoon pet named Tripod, and is now writing novels under her own name. Speaking of Atlas Shrugged, people should read it again because of the way the current government is going. You could go the way of Bro. Black and try a name like Celestrial Dawn? Phooy, phooy...spit, spit....

Okay, one more comment... There are two things that ALWAYS remind me of Emily: To Kill a Mockingbird and Vincent Van Gogh. I can still remember coming home one night to our apartment at Campus Plaza and only one very dim light was on. Emily was sitting there sobbing. I of course thought that something terrible had happened as I generally did not see Emily cry. However, it turned out she was simply reading a biography of Vincent Van Gogh.

In light of that, I would like to put a plug in for the name Anna Cornelia. It's a little different (at least the middle name is), but it is Van Gogh's mother's name.

Amy said...

Anna's cute. Not so fond of Cornelia. Cordelia's pretty close. Remember Anne of Green Gables wanted to be named that? I also like Kate and Olivia. Sarah said the other day that she wants to name a daughter Kate, so she called it. Just kidding, I'm sure she wouldn't mind having a cousin named Kate, too! We have a little girl named Marina in our ward and she's the cutest little thing. I think that would be a good name. Literary theme, huh? Elizabeth Bennett comes to mind. Elizabeth Jane (for Jane Austen, too). You could call her Lizzy, then we would both have daughters named after beloved family dogs! WV is "ardscout" weird!

Emily said...

ardscout haha!
Ok, so Ellie is a good one to have on the table now. 1. because I have Ami's blessing (by the way, I misspelled your name, which I did to my sister Amy on this blog I think not too long ago and Sue laughed. See Sue? I do it the other way too!) 2. it works because that is a favorite heroine of mine too, from Sense and Sensibility, but she spells her's "Elinor" and I think you spell Ellie's the other way, so there would be a difference because I would have to go the Austin route.
When B posted this post I THOUGHT that photographer was a friend of yours Aim, but then I figured I must be mistaken. B gets around in the blog world and it is possible that she has cruised to your blog from my blog and her blog caught her eye (hope you followed that). We will have to wait to see for sure though, perhaps she randomly just knows about her.
That Van Gogh story is very funny! Heehee I'm a nerd, but in my defense Van Gogh had a really sad life and I've always seen sadness (and madness) in his art and reading a detailed account of it all just got to me I think.

ps. it's nice to hear from you on here Ami, and whenever you feel you have something to speak, you have our blessing. You too Em! (My friend Emily Petersen Kim keeps fair tabs on this blog too, we talked about it last week. She was recently up very late laughing at our post about good looking celebrities gone bad.)

One more thing, I just can't get on board with Dagny. Too weird. Also rest comfortably knowing you will never have a grand daughter named Celestrial Dawn if I have anything to do with it.

B said...

Ok, I am going to confess. I am a self proclaimed blog stalker. Ami, I found her when I was looking at the family portraits she took of you, because I was following your blog because I think it's really fun/funny. I started looking at all of Em's friends blogs and I have found some AWESOME ones from there (including one by the brother of the bass player in Spoon, which is my favorite band ever). Anyways, Minna is a genius, and I have been keeping tabs on her ever since.

Marina (from Amy's ward) was the cutest baby I've EVER seen. Biggest blue eyes and round rosebud lips and cute pixie haircut. So no negative association there. And I love the idea of using foreign names. I'm still looking for any cute sounding French towns (Rumilly, Marcellaz, and Aix-les-bains don't quite cut it, and Paris has unfortunately become whorish.)

Haley said...

Ellie is cute, I also thought of that one as a possibility when we named Allison. It's really cute. I also love Olivia and Lucy, so cute!! Anna is really pretty. I like the idea of doing literary heroines, that's cute! As long as they aren't weird. Please don't do Renesmee or Bella! Haha. I would also cry if I read a biography on Van Gogh, he was a very troubled soul and I have always had a soft spot for him.

ajmah said...

Ah yes, the brother of the bass player in spoon. He (the brother) was one of my sister's freshman year family home evening brothers at BYU, and presently one of our (mine, Alex's, and my sister's) arch-nemesises in fantasy football.

As for blog stalking, I do it too, so go right ahead.

Sue said...

Most of the names on the list are total hud sauce. Kate isn't bad. Kate Chopin is a good writer, so there is your female literary tie-in. Can't you just name her Scout II? Then we can all call her blanket.

Neaners said...

Sue cracks me up! Blanket LOL! Kate and Ellie and Anna are great. Like Amy mentioned before you will have to look at her when she is born and it will just fit. Take care!

Amy said...

I like Ellie a lot, too, and it is a good tie-in with Elinor. I'll try to think of more for you.
p.s. glad you don't like Dagny and Celestial Dawn!

Sue said...

I went to high school with the Celestial Dawn mentioned. She really does exist.

B said...

HAHAHAHA!!! Blanket!!!! Why not just Kiki? Funniest comment ever Sue.

Thank you for validating my blog-stalking! I feel much better now.

WV = rescra. You just rescrad me from thinking I was a wierd blog stalker.

Emily said...

How about Emmajesty?

Cat said...

I read a book a bit ago with a female character named Georgie Hands. I think it's cute! I also like Lucy, but maybe a bit trendy. I've heard a few of them lately. That's all I have for now, names are hard!

Pops said...

I don't get the "blanket" joke. Please explain somebody.

Matt Wright said...

Emily I didn't know you liked/were considering the name Lucy. Go right ahead if you like it. First come first serve! And to Cath, I have not heard of someone named Lucy in YEARS, nor have I ever even known a Lucy. Trendy names drive me CRAZY. I sure hope it isn't.

Dan W said...

George, Michael Jackson named his second son the same name as his first one (Prince Michael II), but he called the child Blanket.

We have a beautiful girl in our Primary class named Ellie. I'm late weighing in, but of the other names on the list, I like Iris, Olivia, Paige, Sophie, and Zoe best.

Emily said...

My joke to Sue was a reference to Micheal's brother Jermaine, who named his child, "Jermajesty".

Micheal is certainly NOT the only weird Jackson (nor was he the only one with a god complex).

Matt, I haven't even considered Lucy for a second.

Pops said...

Thanks for the blanket explanation. I can't see where that is pretty funny in the comments. Waytogo, sue. Was Blanket the one he was holding over the edge of the balcony? Maybe he was thinking of tieing the ends with rope and making a parachute. I thought Scout as a name was a little out there when I first heard of it, but now I can't see Scout with any other name. Names grow to fit it seems. Just don't try Renesmee.

Pops said...

in the above comment I meant to say "can" where that is funny....not can't...

Emily said...

NO ONE on the planet hated/hates the name Renesmee more then I.

Sue said...

Glad you guys liked the blanket joke. I certainly didn't mean any disrespect for Michael, I just had to say it.

I had no idea about "Jermajesty", or if I did hear about it, I repressed it right away. It is safe to say the entire Jackson is eccentric to say the least.

I forgot to mention I like Iris too. I'm not the one who suggested it, but I do like the name. And there is a literary tie-in with Iris Murdoch, an author I love. I was just looking at my bookcase and I own more of her books than any other author. Kurt Vonnegut is a very close second.

Em have you asked Scout to suggest a name? If anything just for laughs for what she comes up with. But you never know.

B said...

I suggested Apple as a joke, and Scout got pretty excited about it for a minute. Then there would be new meaning to the Apple Dance! Stupid Gwyneth Paltrow.

Cat said...

Took me a while of not-thinking, then a few came into my head last night. So here's my list of girl names:
Avril
Michaela
Millicent
Nora
Peyton
Phoenix
Riley
Ruby
Saffron
Shannon

Sue said...

I like Nora and Ruby the best from Cat's list. Isn't Nora the name of the woman in Ibsen's play "A Doll's House"? Another female literary tie-in.

Pops said...

I don't see many names from Cat's list that I really go for. Too many male names or skateboarders, or spices or elephants, but I don't choose. Nora is the female partner of the "Thin Man" books and movies. Another female literary tie-in.

Amy said...

I just think of Helen Reddy's character in Pete's Dragon.

Amy said...

Have you considered "Georgiana"? That was Great-grandma Hatch's name. I just thought of this since she has been referred to as "George" a lot already!

Unknown said...

Oh good, I can comment?! Yay!
I really like Ruby and Iris. Ernie's foot has spoken about Ruby being used as a name in our family, so I would love it to be used in yours :) Also, Opal is cute. There is a movie called "Opal Dream" or "Opal Dreams" (I think) that is so so cute and this reminded me of that. The little girl in it has two imaginary friends named Pobby and Dinghan, which are also cute names when spoken with an Australian accent. Also, I think Poppy is a cute name. It's the name of the little girl in one of Bruce's train books which makes it minimally literary.
And finally, my favorite memory of Vincent van Gogh and you/us is from our senior year when we all researched one of his paintings in arts history. Remember we made that video and were trying to come up with titles...the best one was "Vincent: The Man That Made the Van Go(gh)." Good times.
Oh, one more thing. That post about celebrities was awesome. I was crying with joy.

Matt Wright said...

HAHAHA!! Vincent: The Man That Made the Van Go(gh)
That is so great. Reminds me of Emily and all of her fun friends growing up.

Emily said...

Hey Em-- I like Ruby, but was the name of a little terror in my last Nursery class. I'd have to get over that.
That is so funny you remember one of the titles we came up with, and a good one at that. I do remember that video well. Good memories of Miss McPolin's class. Remember when Josh and I got a little obsessed with Thoreau and were coming up with ways to be civily disobedient? Ah, nerd life.

I remember exactly how the name Booker came to be. I was driving in Sue's old Nissan truck she gave me. I had to pick up Travis somewhere and then we were going to Salt Lake to have dinner with our friends Scott and Stacey. Green Onions came on the radio (that's a Booker T. and the MGs song). And I thought, well that's a cool name. The only reason I knew them was because Neil Young did an album with them. Then of course my next thought was Booker Taliaferro Washington, famous African American orator, educator and writer. More cool. Then, hey George Clooney played a Booker on Roseanne! I tested the name on Travis when I picked him up, he liked it. Then tested it on Scott and Stacey and they loved it too (they are big fans of Booker T. and the MGs). So Booker it was.

Cat said...

You should name her Lola! Scout would love that.

Emily said...

Well, we done it. We've decided officially. Sorry B, it's not from your list. But, your list did get us talking...

B said...

Hey, I'm just glad she has a name! When Gwynaedd was born in our upstairs bathroom, she didn't have a name for a few days, and it was sad to just call her Baby Girl. I wanted to name her Robin or Clover (I was 7, and had only named rabbits and cats before), but somehow Gwynaedd Sunshine upstaged both of those. Glad I could help a little bit though! Besides, Elle means She in French, and anything French is great with me!
