THE KINGS SPEECH....BLOODY AWESOME MOVIE

Wow! Mom and I saw this this afternoon. If I had seen this movie before the Oscars, I would have bet the farm that Colin Firth would have the Best Actor award and the movie the Best Picture. It is hands down one of the best movies, maybe ever! Top ten.

Don't let the R rating keep you away except for the principle if you choose. The blast of F bombs lasted maybe 10 seconds and it's funny and not offensive to the ear and soul. (in my opinion anyway) I am glad they are going to bleep out that scene and release a PG edition. The movie has a good message for young people, history people, disability people and all people and that will open it up for a larger audience.

See it! See it!

I have been dying to see this movie since this summer when I heard it was coming out this winter. Sometimes I feel like I've already seen it with all the clips I've seen, but I am sure that's not the case. Although, thanks to the Oscars- I have already heard his final non stuttering speech. So I'd like to thank the Academy for that.

Glad you and mom liked it.

"So I'd like to thank the Academy for that." HA!

Best movie, maybe ever?! Wow Pops. That is saying a lot. I still haven't seen it. Maybe if it's still in theaters I will check it out this week. Helena Bonham Carter gets to be in the coolest movies! Fight Club, Big Fish, and Sweeny Todd are some of my favorite movies. Alice In Wonderland was kinda lame though... and sadly, Crispen Glover's part just made it lamer.
You bring up an interesting point about swearing in movies that I happen to agree with. As you said, it's a matter of opinion, but it isn't always offensive to me either. Sometimes it just seems to fit within the context and other times it just doesn't work and seems very unnecessary and annoying.

Lawrence of Arabia is still the best movie ever! T-2 still in the my top ten with the Kings Speech.

Em, you still haven't seen the scene with that closing speech. The Geoffrey Rush character is in the recording booth with him, and there's a bunch of cool stuff going on during it. Don't miss it. It is really a fine film. Lots to learn about mid-twentieth-century history, English royalty and the current queen's father and mother, the stress of the months leading up to WWII, etc.

I disagree with George strongly on the idea of a different version of the movie that removes the very small amount of cussing. I hope it never happens, and I don't recommend waiting until then to have a most uplifting--seriously uplifting, spirit-filled movie about courage. The swearing is completely inoffensive. It's one of several therapeutic tools we learn about in the film that free up some of the fears and anxieties that contribute to stammering, and no one is being called those words as names.

Come-on, Dan. These days it is all about money. They are doing a PG or PG-13 version of the movie. Done deal. Just muting the f-bombs. Pretty lame and I agree with your whole comments. This proposed messing with that scene, however will open up the movie to a whole bigger and differnt audiance and make more money. I don't have a problem with that. This is not like years ago that guy in P.G. modifying R rated movies for the LDS viewers. This I hear has the blessing of the writer, director and the whole limey bunch.

Fun fact: that messing around modifying movies to PG started with the nude scene in Titanic. Nice- I feel like we've come full circle.

On the swearing thing: Personally, I think (and I haven't seen the film) but this is a letter of the law/spirit of the law thing, and I think you all know my stand on that. But we all have our own "personally-s" that mean their own thing to us individually, so-- what more can you say? We all have to do what feels right to ourselves.

You're right, George, that it's a money thing driving it, but Colin Firth is on record as being dead set against it. It's Weinstein driving it, so he'll win (and has already won a concession with the MPAA to allow him to release this version sooner than the 90 days it usually makes filmmakers wait before putting out alternate versions). But it isn't right.

For the record, the actual statements that talk specifically about R-rated movies are way fewer than you'd think given all the attention it gets in Mormon discourse, and none from sitting prophets at the time except for one small mention from Benson in a long list of things. Clearly, he wasn't emphasizing it specifically. I can share links to info if folks want.

Interesting Dan. I've haven't thought about that subject too much. (I am just too much of a movie freak to cut them out of my line up.) I try to use some discretion- sometimes I do a better job of it then others.

I have heard about the swearing scene from a few people in my neighborhood (ward) and they have said the same thing as you guys- it is way different then other scenes with swearing in it (and that it is quite funny).

As for me, witnessing proper ol' Colin release a string of f-bombs is something I gotta see for myself.

Wow, Matt. The exact word Colin said in the movie during the scene in question!

I can't wait to see this movie. That is quite the recommendation Dad. Best movie ever! I like that. I hear that the Queen watched it and liked it too.
