500 Days of Summer

Watch this movie peeps! I watched it last night and loved it. I had heard a lot of good things about it and decided I should give it a try. You know me, I don't like romantic comedies, but this one is different. It is fun to watch because the story jumps all over the place. It basically tells the story of a relationship Joseph Gordon-Levitt has with a girl named Summer. It spans 500 days of their relationship and jumps from like day 40 to day 380, then back to day 8. But it is done very well and has a good flow, it doesn't feel choppy. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is great. He is becoming one of my favorite young actors. He picks pretty interesting films, a lot of independent stuff. If you haven't seen The Lookout or Brick, you should check them out. Yeah, he was Cobra in GI Joe, but he probably needs a big paycheck once in a while, so he can continue doing lower budget stuff. So, I'll forgive him. Zooey Deschanel plays Summer. I like her too, she is the girl in Elf, what was her name in that? Doby? Anyway, it's a good movie, has a good sound track, well directed and well acted. And, it's not a totally gooey and unbelievable plot like "I heard this guy on the radio and I'm going to meet him on Valentines Day at the Empire State Building" kind of crap. Sorry, no offense, I just find those kind of movies boring.

Oh yeah, it's PG-13, so it's safe for everyone.

Cheap shot at Sleepless in Seattle, Sue. That movie had some great bits. i.e. the two husbands making fun of their wives by crying over the actors in The Dirty Dozen. Priceless!! I too have always liked Zooey. She was in that crazy space movie that Matt liked so much. Thanks for the review.

I have wanted to see this movie forever! Travis and I both love Zooey Dechanel. I heard this thing on NPR about what an interesting part that music plays in it. The guy was saying that the music is almost like a character in the film, not just a soundtrack. That interests me. He used as an example a scene where J. G.-Levit is in his room bouncing a ball to the perfect beat of the music, like he could hear it. Did you notice that, Sue?

Sorry about the cheap shot. Sleepless in Seattle isn't a terrible movie. I always like Tom Hanks, and that scene you referenced is my favorite scene. It's just that is the only romantic comedy I've seen that I could remember most of the plot of.

500 Days of Summer is good, you and mom should check it out.

I've been interested in this movie too and am also a Zooey fan. Glad it got the Sue stamp, I'll for sure check it out!

Yes, I totally noticed that. That scene is really cool. Because at first, he isn't bouncing the ball to the beat, then he starts doing it to the beat like he can hear the music. And you know he can't, it's not music that is playing in his room.

There is an even better scene with the music. It's the morning after he realizes he is in love with Summer. He steps out of his apartment building and starts walking to work. There is music in the background, an old 70's funky tune, I can't remember which one right now. But, he starts walking to the music, then kind of doing arm movements to it, then he breaks into an all out dance number to it with the other people on the sidewalk. Sounds kind of cheesy, but it really works well in the context of the whole movie.

Oh, yeah. The guy talked about that scene too. I love spontaneous street dancing scenes, usually.

I want to watch this movie! I have also heard good things about it, I like Zooey too. I know Sarah and Kelly really like this movie too.

I think her name in Elf in "Joli" or something like that. I'll have to watch it. Sounds interesting. Lost Season 5 Disc 1 arrived today! Yay. It's been a long time.

Ok, her name is "Jovie" in Elf and the song that he dances to in the movie is "Makin My Dreams Come True" by Hall and Oates. Love that song! We watched the movie tonight and loved it! So well done and the directing was awesome. Love all the little details in it. Really really good. Except for some language and a few crude parts.

Lor and I saw this in the theatre and really loved it. Agree with all the good things said. Glad to hear it's on DVD now!

I'm a huge Zooey fan, too (even liking her in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy that George is teasing about). Did you guys see JGL on SNL a few weeks ago? One of the better episodes this season, and he really went all out on all of his skits. Very likable.

Perhaps it's the fact that I was up past 4 last night, but I can't crack the JGL code. Help!

JGL = Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Joseph Gordon-Levitt = JGL

Haley said...

Whoa Dan we posted that at the same time, weird!

I suppose had I re read the post I COULD have figured that out.
When will I remember that even though I stay up until after 4, I still have babies that wake me up at 8?

Pops said...

Just to show you how dumb I am. Who the bip is Joseph Gordon-Levitt?

Haley said...

He is Tom in 500 Days of Summer. Haha.

I ordered this from Netflix and put it to the top of my quiew (sp)

I watched it with Sarah and Kelly. I kept commenting on the music the whole time. To the point where it was bothering them I think. Haha. Shout out to the part where he is singing a Pixies song in a bar with a cover band or something. Sweet. But yea, the editing/directing is great. JGL was pretty amazing on SNL Dan. I saw it. Anyone who does running backflips off the walls while singing in their monolog gets my vote!

I too was delighted by the Pixies kareoke! Also, this is weird...but Zooey Deshanel is named after the character in 'Frankie and Zooey' by J.D. Salinger who died on Wednesday. Also, her sister (a.k.a. Bones) is named after Emily Dickinson. Hooray for naming children and pets after literary figures!

Personally, I think it's kind of a stupid thing to do.

Yeah, I guess you're Wright, Em. I mean, think about it. You could easily end up with a name like Elinor, or Scout or Kurt or Sissy-Nar. I'll have none of it!

Hahaha,hehehe....you two, Ems&Cat are pretty funny kids. Love you.

My W.V. is porever... timely.
