...........OWEN!!!
Yeah, that's right, our cute little puppy is named after one of our favorite character's in a movie. Most people, if they knew, would think us quite crazy, but I'm sure you all understand, knowing how endearing this character has become to this family over the years. Owen, is a little sweetheart. He's so cute, we just have to keep looking at him to make sure he's really that cute! And he really is! He's pretty laid back, but is starting to show some signs of being a normal, healthy, active, (sometimes annoying) puppy. Our first night together had it's bad moments, especially for B. I went to bed at one, he balled for a while, I got up at three and he went to the bathroom, seemed sleepy and didn't protest going back in his crate. I got up at six and he went again. Then, I found a note from B. They had quite the bonding experience at 3:45. He apparently was freaking out. She let him out and noticed that he had pooped in his kennel. She had to clean it all up, wash his blanket, etc. I'm so sorry, B!! I think he was under a lot of stress; leaving his mommy, his litter-mates, met a new family, drove in a car for about 11 hours in one day. Poor little guy. I'm sure he will adjust and we will all sleep a little better soon! We love him so much!

OWEN!! Perfect. I love it!
Happy for you guys and not real envious of the brand new puppy thing you have going on, but it will pass and be worth it. Can't wait to see him! I'd love to come up sometime fairly soon to get a look at him.
Congratulations on the addition! Are you going to teach him to say: "You the shower curtain fella?"
We're working on it. We're also teaching him to spit, wipe his mouth and shake hands.
We hope you guys can come up sometime soon. He's so sweet! Glad you like his name.
Haa,haa: Love it! Great looking pup. I got on yooutube at work and watched the "Owen" clip a few times from P.T.& A. Laughed and laughed.
At least you can see Chester's eyes. black on black makes for some difficulty. When he is huge, he will something else!
Amy, I did a little digging and found this forum: http://thenewfworld.com/forum/index.php
This might be helpful, I looked for a minute on the forums and couldn't find house training right away, but figured you could ask you own questions- looks like there is an expert owner and other random people that have all owned/own Newfies (apparently that is the lingo). Anyway, you may find some help talking to other people that know the breed.
Thanks, Em. Our trusty internet researcher. That was nice of you. I'll check it out tomorrow while he bites my toes at the computer. We had a pretty good afternoon and evening. I think things are looking up.
Hey Amy,
I would totally treat Owen when he goes out side. Also I remember Lola would 'pee' in the same spot trying to cover up some mystery scent until we really doused it in the smell eliminator...So I don't know if there seems to be any rhyme or reason to where he 'goes' but it's a possibility.
The other thing I remember was the vet telling me to tell Lola what she was doing by saying 'go potty' or something like that when she was out side and keep her focused on 'doing her business', and to really praise her as soon as she had done 'it' and that really helped.
There we go-I successfully used 4 different descriptive words for dogs relieving themselves (5 now) happily marked with apostrophes for your convenience!
Thanks Rob. I appreciate the advice. (And who knew there were so many ways to say it?) There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to where he goes inside. He has several favorite spots. I always tell him "
'lets go outside!' and he seems to understand; he gets excited and walks toward the door. Outside, when I take him to 'the spot' I tell him to 'go potty' and he almost always goes pretty quick, then I praise him profusely and, as of yesterday, give him a treat. He's doing pretty well. I'm sure he'll get it down soon.
Sorry this has turned into a housebreaking post! I appreciate everyone's advice and concern.
It's such a relief when they are complety housebroken and potty trained. We sleep sound knowing that Chester will not leave a "deposit" somewhere in the house. It helps having a pet door to the outside. Owen is so great, he is chillen and calm most of the time I have seen him. He is not near as nippy as Chesterfield, but Chet is getting alot better and knows what NO and sit means. Love those pups.
I saw a few improvements today. Once, he actually walked towards the door and stood there! Yay! I think I'm figuring out his little routine a little better too and outsmarting him a little. Dad, come over at 7:00 to see a not-so-chillin Owen.
He is so cute Amy! I have to come out there while he is still a puppy. The pee thing sucks, just keep him away from electrical outlets.
Ha ha. He is SO cute, Sue, you won't believe it. You need to come see him. He's growing fast. And the housebreaking is going much better! Only one pee in the house today!!! I thought it might be worse today because it snowed about 5 inches this morning, but found out that he LOVES snow so much! He is from Newfoundland, you know. Anyway, I'm so proud of him. Progress!!!
Yay Owen!!!!!
Not so much yay today. He digressed a little, but, it takes time!
Funny Owen story. I think we have a little smarty pants on our hands. Owen loves his treats after going potty OUTSIDE. The other day, I took him outside and Owen kindof squatted in a somewhat awkward pose (not the normal peeing stance) all the while looking at me to see if I was watching him. I wondered what he was doing because it sure didn't look like he was going. He came right over to me, sat down and waited for his treat. I looked over, saw no yellow snow, and said, "you didn't go potty--no treat for you--go potty". He walked over on the grass and peed for real, walked over and got his treat. I really think he was trying to fool me! He's done it 3 times now. Thank goodness for snow and a smart mommy! Silly dog.
Hahaha: Great story, great puppy, Amy. Owen is the bomb!
What a smartie!!!! And, may I add, a little devious. That dog likes his treats.
I took Chester to the vets yesterday for his puppy shots. He weighed 34 pounds. He is getting big. Snatched my glasses off the table and broke the lens. They were covered by warrentee. Yea!
