CHROLS--Breaking Dawn

Well, I finished the Twilight series . . . and have to say that as far as happy endings go, this one was pretty satisfying. Not sure I always like things so neatly wrapped up with everyone realizing their fondest wishes (Leah as an exception here, and I guess the Denali coven who lose their sister--even though Kate ends up with a new and pretty dang cool mate), but I actually thought the final showdown and how everything came to a head was really well done. And if Meyer had something close to this in mind all the way along, then I am impressed. It sure took a frickin' long time to get to this book and all its action, though! I was feeling pretty weary after Eclipse, so I'm glad this one had a lot less hand-wringing and a lot more forward movement all the way through it.

I definitely met a surprise on who Jacob imprinted on (thought it was going to be Leah in one of those typical "I hate you but I really love you" kinds of things--and I have to say I was sort of rooting for that to happen, or at least Leah to find someone to love her), but I thought Meyer did a great job with how that imprinting happened and how it changed the dynamic for Jacob and Bella. The earlier scene with Quil imprinting on that little girl was CREEPING me out, but as it unfolded with Jake and Nessie, the context and what imprinting really means (without inappropriate physical longings when the kids are so young) helped me get past that. And Bella's reactions and hers and Edward's growing acceptance to who had imprinted on their daughter were also pretty believable and well executed.

I generally liked the new vampire characters and thought they were well drawn for the amount of time she gave to them, and I loved the Romanian dudes. They were hilarious. Garrett and his speech was great, and I thought the way Meyer explained the Volturi motivations and the way they ruled the vampire world was decently complex and interesting.

I liked the Jacob and Rosalie relationship and rip-fest, and I'm glad Jasper became a more compelling character in the final two books. Still can't understand the casting choice they made for him for the movies, though. Completely off! Yay, too, for Charlie hanging in there so well through all the changes and also for him ending up with Sue.

Bella.... Still not my favorite character for taking so long to begin to grow into a fraction of confidence. And overall, I'm still not sure the romance novel is a good thing for the world and am pretty solidly against any idea of soul mates, but I guess by the end I was sucked in and rooting for the right people anyway.

Thanks, I guess, for urging me to dive into the world of Forks, Washington ....

Oh yeah, what's up with the cover? A chess queen? Is that supposed to represent Bella? Nessie? Or is the game of chess and vampire strategies the focus?

Pops said...

Wow, Dan, you dazzal me with your commentary and insights. You are a pro. Nice work! You made we want to read the book again.

In Stephenie's words: "Breaking Dawn's cover is a metaphor for Bella's progression throughout the entire saga. She began as the weakest (at least physically, when compared to vampires and werewolves) player on the board: the pawn. She ended as the strongest: the queen. In the end, it's Bella that brings about the win for the Cullens." Also the red represents being human, having blood. The white represents her becoming a vampire, immortal. I have also heard that people interpret the queen piece to be Bella and the red pawn to be Renesmee and she is protecting her. Anyway, glad you liked it! So many people ripped on this book, but I really like it. I love the Romanians, so funny!

Dan W said...

Interesting on the cover. Thanks, Haley!

People ripped on THIS book rather than or more than the others? Wow, if so! This is the only one that DIDN'T make me crazy, pulling out my hair from all the characters' angst.

So in Meyer's vampire world, humans have blood and vampires don't, right? No hearts, so nothing circlulates? (Is this true of vampires in other imaginings?) So why would they have nutritional needs and/or a digestive system? And if their bodies can't change, why would a vampire male have a certain type of fluid that can make babies? (Credit for Lorri for putting this last question in my head.)

Haley said...

Oh man people ripped on this one like crazy. WAY more than the other ones. I really don't understand all the griping, I liked it. You might want to read through the FAQ's at stepheniemeyer.com she answers a lot of questions. Here is the answer to yours:
"Vampires are physically similar enough to their human origins to pass as humans under some circumstances (like cloudy days). There are many basic differences. They appear to have skin like ours, albeit very fair skin. The skin serves the same general purpose of protecting the body. However, the cells that make up their skin are not pliant like our cells, they are hard and reflective like crystal. A fluid similar to the venom in their mouths works as a lubricant between the cells, which makes movement possible (note: this fluid is very flammable). A fluid similar to the same venom lubricates their eyes so that their eyes can move easily in their sockets. (However, they don't produce tears because tears exist to protect the eye from damage, and nothing is going to be able to scratch a vampire's eye.) The lubricant-venom in the eyes and skin is not able to infect a human the way saliva-venom can. Similarly, throughout the vampire's body are many versions of venom-based fluids that retain a marked resemblance to the fluid that was replaced, and function in much the same way and toward the same purpose. Though there is no venom replacement that works precisely like blood, many of the functions of blood are carried on in some form. Also, the nervous system runs in a slightly different but heightened way. Some involuntary reactions, like breathing, continue (in that specific example because vampires use the scents in the air much more than we do, rather than out of a need for oxygen). Other involuntary reactions, like blinking, don't exist because there is no purpose for them. The normal reactions of arousal are still present in vampires, made possible by venom-related fluids that cause tissues to react similarly as they do to an influx of blood. Like with vampire skin—which looks similar to human skin and has the same basic function—fluids closely related to seminal fluids still exist in male vampires, which carry genetic information and are capable of bonding with a human ovum. This was not a known fact in the vampire world (outside of Joham's personal experimenting) before Nessie, because it's nearly impossible for a vampire to be that near a human and not kill her.

I didn't get into all of these details at my signings because it's a long, complicated mouthful. Also, it's hard to be clearly heard with all the screaming. Mostly, though, I waited to do this in writing because I have an immature, Homer Simpson-like tendency to giggle when I say the words "seminal fluids" in public."

Dan W said...

Strange that people didn't like this one. Maybe I'll check out the website if I decide to do a lot more thinking about the series, but I probably won't rush there right now...

Quite the explanation of vampire physiology! She's had to do some thinking there! It strikes me that the whole issue of their retaining the ability to procreate with humans flies in the face of evolutionary theory which would have seen it as selected out as no one was using that ability/trait for several millennia, but since it's all make believe (or is it? there has to be truth behind every legend, doesn't there?!? ) who cares!

Her line at end about the tendency to giggle when talking reproductive functions in public is great fun!

Neaners said...

Interesting Haley. Thanks for telling us about the biology of the vampires. I did not enjoy the ending very much. I was disappointed in the fact that all the vampires got ready for a fight and then it didn't happen at all. I think Stephanie could have had a bit more action. Oh well. I would love to read a new series with the adventures of Reneesme. What do you think?

Dan W said...

"Jeanine and Caius sittin' in a tree..."

I loved that there was no fight and that intelligence (both smart arguments and a reconnaissance mission) saved the day. Would you have liked to see one or more of the Cullens slaughtered, J?

I thought that she did a decent job of leaving things open for sequels, too. Plenty more things to do with the Cullens having an eternity to deal with, plus rich potential in the La Push shape shifters and their relationships. Plus why not go for it and figure out ways for every mythical creature ever conceived to be real and to interact with and see new possibilities in how they live from encountering Carlisle and his gang...

Emily said...

Glad you liked it Dan! Apparently, Stephenie was asked a lot about if vampire women could have babies during the whole book series and she was sweating it that some one would ask about male vampires (with human women) but it never once came up! Weird, since there was just such a relationship going on.......
The fact that the vamps never came to blows was a big complaint about the book- personally, I thought it climaxed well enough without it and I was very happy no one had to die. No complaints there. Here are my three big complaints about the book (they are admittedly petty). 1: I was mondo upset with Bella for the first half. I was mad at her for protecting the pregnancy and going to Rosalie. I hated how horribly it effected Edward (I know this is a weird point of view to have being a mother that has bared her own children, but (on first reading) it really bothered me.) FYI: It didn't bother me the second time around since I knew the outcome. 2: When the vampire venom was coursing through her and she was in a world of hurt, how she was so self sacrificing. She didn't let anyone know that the morphine did nothing. I just thought it was another really annoying thing Bella did (in the category of self sacrifice). 3: last but NOT least-- the name Renesme HATE IT HATE IT HATE IT HATE IT!!! It was the only moment where I felt a bit embarrassed for Mormons everywhere that the author was Mormon and had to expose the world to our unfortunate penchant of combining two ancestral names into one awful name. (ie LaRae, DaVerell, etc.)
Other then those examples, I really liked the book. I have to make dinner, but will get into my likes later when I can.

Haley said...

Hahaha! I'm with you Em on those dislikes. And I also like that there was no fighting. I was freaking out that Alice or someone was going to die, I am a big fan of happy endings! Jeanine and Caius...hahaha! That was funny.

Dan W said...

Em, agree with you on number 2 especially, and you totally have me cracking up with your comment about Renesme reflecting the Mormon propensity for combining names to make a new one to give to babies! They only mentioned it once, but even Nessie's middle name was Carlie in order to honor both Carlisle and Charlie. Now I am embarrassed to confess to something many of you may not know: we actually did this with Hope's middle name. We took Jean (Lorri's mother's name) and Zella (her grandmother's name) and made them into Giselle. At least we were subtle about it, going with an already standard name and spelling.

Looking forward to hearing more from you on the book!

Alright--
I know that Meyer pretty much wrote a giant book called Forever Dawn that is pretty much the three last books, shortly after Twilight before it was a hit. She soon got a deal for three more books and spread the book into three books by adding more stuff to it, but ended up finishing Forever Dawn, just for her sister. So she indeed had all that in mind pretty much from the beginning.
I felt very satisfied with Jacob imprinting on Nessie, it validated the fact that he was so obsessed with Bella, I think he was imprinting with her insides (or egg if you will) and that is why he was so taken with her in a soul-mate-ish way. That solved the Jacob problem (I really liked Jacob, but was on "Team Edward") and didn't like the idea that he would just imprint (we all know it was going to happen) on someone random we didn't know. FYI: I predicted that he would imprint on one of Bella's school friends (particularly Jessica) I had it all worked out-- he hadn't seen her since he had changed and I thought it would be funny to see her all of a sudden thrown into vampire/werewolf land. She was a funny character to me but a little too one dimensional- my theory would have given Meyer a little more credit as a writer). Her high school friends were all just filler, I know. Anyway, that was my working theory. I never dreamed Bella would have a baby-- that surprised me to no end! I was never creeped out by the imprinting on little girls after the initial few paragraphs, it was explained to my satisfaction on that first page in Eclipse.
I LOVED the new vampire characters- they were so fun to read about, I can't think of who the Romanian dudes are off hand. I was always a big fan of the Volturi, they interested me big time since they were introduced in book 1 and I was so happy that they were so well done in the movie (especially since so little was well done in that movie).
Jacob and Rosalie were definitely funny, I enjoyed all of that and really enjoyed being inside Jacob's head for a change, he was funny. (Maybe that was why you liked Breaking Dawn Dan? You got a vacation from Bella's head?)
I agree with the Jasper thing- he is so lame in the movies and great in the book. Alice isn't anywhere near as great in the movie either. I thought all the back stories on the vampires were really really interesting I LOVED reading those and also really enjoyed all the Quilete legends in Eclipse- I like that kind of stuff. I was very happy with Charlie's ending ending too, but that brings up another problem I had with Breaking Dawn- I thought Rene got shafted. What in the world is going to happen there? Meyer made it clear through the other books that Rene was very perceptive when it came to Bella and then what happens with her got totally dropped. Charlie is going to be able to see Bella, know kind of what's up, see his grandchild- but, uh- what is going to happen with Bella's mom? Kind of a bad plot hole in my opinion.

Emily said...

bip. My comment was so long, it wouldn't accept it! That's a first....

My favorite part of the book was Vampire Bella. I LOVED her after she changed. I loved that she was finally a strong character, and LOVED the fact that it became clear that she was like hardwired for being a vampire her whole life. It was like she never was meant to be human in the first place. She was clumsy in her human body and weak, she didn't fit in, but once she was a vampire, she soared. She made the best vampire ever! You all may not agree with me, but that fact validated and excused many things about Bella and made me forgive all the annoying things (almost all- not the self sacrificing) about her character dating back to Twilight. She just simply was destined to be a vampire. Cool.
So, I would like to say in closing, that I liked the way most of the story was wrapped up in a pretty little bow. Generally, I don't like that. Usually, when I am reading a book of substance, I like a thoughtful ending where I am left thinking and brooding, etc. This is not so when I read total brain candy as this series is. It is light, interesting brain fluff and I like my brain fluff to say "happily ever after" (which should have been the last sentence of this book).

I thought that was how Harry Potter was going to be until I got to the last few books, but then I quickly realized that it couldn't end with a pretty little bow and it mostly left the realms of brain candy. That is ok too. My brain fluff can grow substance, I'm cool with that.

Wow! I'm impressed with all of your comments and insight. I guess I have very little left to add, other than agreeing with most everything that was said. I had very similar feelings/thoughts as you guys (including Lorri's questions). But, overall, like you guys, I felt that everything was explained well and wrapped up nicely for me, too. I, too, liked Bella as a vampire. Cool stuff, and you couldn't help but be happy for her finally getting her wish. Surprised by the imprinting, but accepted it gladly. I loved Jacob, too, but like Ems, was rooting for Edward. Oh, and I completely agree with you, Emily, on the name Renesme. Hated it! I feel like I need to read it for a second time, now! Thanks for all of your comments. Sorry, this is the best I can do with a 75 pound puppy chewing on my feet and knees.

wv: rentese--tried really hard to get renesme.

I totally agree also Em. I LOVE vampire Bella and also thought it was so cool how she was destined to become a vampire. Like it guided her choice to move to Forks, because her reasons never really made sense, even to her. One of my favorite parts of BD is when she meets with J Jenks. I really don't know why but I love those parts. I guess it's fun to see Bella as powerful and intimidating. I hated that Alice left, I almost cried. Haha. I thought she would never come back but was very relieved when she did. Ok, that's all I can do with a 20 pound baby hanging on me! :)

Dan W said...

Wow, fun to talk with you all about it! Mostly in agreement, and I appreciate the line of thinking where you are causing me to go about how Bella’s becoming a vampire fits very well right from the beginning. As Haley said, it helps make sense of her decision from unknown origins about why to leave Phoenix for Forks; she was awkward and a bit of an outcast anyway, also already pale compared to most Arizonans, etc. And, as you say, this is confirmed by how well she took to vampire life (especially of the type the Cullens lead)—though that can also be attributed somewhat to her vast familiarity about what to expect and her couple of years’ experience with them and their ways. Other newborns don’t get such prep. Even though this was seemingly pre-ordained, however, I still am not sure I like her not really having self-confidence as a human or her never coming to embrace her quirks. Why couldn’t she be a more complete and robust character all along? Wouldn’t that have made her struggle and decisions about her two loves and over the attraction and repulsion to the vampire world even a better internal battle? Anyway, I just don’t think we needed such an angsty lead character to get the story to a satisfying conclusion.

I liked the Romanians as it ties us into Dracula and all those legends: things were different in the world of vampires back before the Volturi wrenched control from that coven. And it would be natural that the guys from the coven that was on top back then would want to see the guys who overthrew them get taken down. What was cool is that Stephan and Vladimir, who would love to see vampires come out of hiding again and be much more open about killing, etc., are instead written here as comic figures—caricatures more than characters, predictable in their responses but nevertheless fun.

(Like you, Em, it's rejecting me from putting my full notes here, so I have to split it up into two)

Dan W said...

(cont.)

I did like being in Jacob’s head for a change, and I’m sure that helped me like this and Eclipse more than the first ones. And while I agree that the movie Alice isn’t quite as funny in her intensity over clothes and parties and surprises as in the book, I still like Ashley Greene in the role. I mean, she’s just so dang HOT! (You ladies get Taylor, so us guys should get some eye candy, too.) She's way hotter than Nikki Reed as Rosalie--the supposedly most beautiful vampire of them all. I like Nikki and think she's very pretty, though, and I am aware of her long relationship with Catherine Hardwicke, so it's hard to really hate her being cast in that role.

Agree with you about the book being brain candy, Em, and also about Harry Potter deviating from that typical genre the further you get into the series. Though I must say that the final bit of the last book that shows all the Hogwarts pals seeing their own kids off to school takes those books back a bit more into the “nice bow” happy ending camp. Still sad and far more realistic for the book’s dark forces that there were so many favorite characters killed along the way.

Finally, you’re right about Rene! I’d had been thinking during the last parts of the book about how Meyer would fold her back into Bella’s world but had forgotten until now that she just didn’t ever do it. Charlie was fun with his “I don’t want to know too much!” approach to all the magic around him. Rene would totally be different, but I think would also come around quite well (judging from her reactions to the quick wedding). Something interesting for a sequel?

Haley said...

It would be but I am pretty sure Stephenie has no intentions of writing anymore. I would LOVE it and so would thousands but she has stated that she has no initial intentions to jump back into vampire land anytime soon. We will see!

Amy said...

I think the casting for Alice was great, they just didn't do her character justice in the writing of the screenplay. Nikki would have had no problem playing Alice up more, I believe. I think it just shows, once again, that the movies are just pretty lame compared to the books. I agree with you, Dan, on the casting of Rosalie. She's just kind of, eh. Stephenie created characters like her and Edward as too perfect to be human, so I guess no one could really live up to our expectations.

Let's see........... I've been mothering two beautiful babies, teaching one to read and the other to sit and to eat cereal like a human instead of trying to suck it down like milk, teaching them both the art of the English language, how to be polite, how to count to 1,000 (Scout achieved that today), took them both on a 8 mile bike trip in 40 degree weather (you try riding a bike with one of those trailers holding 50 pounds of babies behind it! That takes it out of you. Did I mention I live on a mountain and have two good size hills on my route?) Made breakfast lunch and dinner for three people (Rob was gone ALL day today- so I didn't make him any food), all whom eat different things, (one of those people eats food my body makes itself- bet you can't do that), cleaned Scout's room, watched one episode of Grey's Anatomy, I also grocery shop for 4 people (and I clip coupons when I do, research best sales and thus I save on average about 48% on my grocery bill. I actively recycle, be a supportive wife to my husband, make up dances with Scout in the kitchen to make Elinor laugh (Scout comes up with the best dances), and manage an over sized puppy (and feed and care for of course), I even managed to get her upstairs and into the bathtub to get the mud off her paws without getting any mud on the carpet. That's what I've done lately. Oh, and offer insightful perspectives on a teenage vampire book.

Ah! mother rebellion. No, not rebellion...you guys love it and are not quiting. Just telling it like it is. Jane would do that to me once in awhile back in the days when she was doing 50 million things during the day and would complain about a calf stepping on my foot or something like that. I, for one, would never have the guts to question anyones desire for a little escape from the routine chores of life. Lord knows, I did. Fly fishing to Idaho. Duck hunting to Idaho. Golf, reading, movies, TV, flying and driving. To put the knock on someone for reading a few sappy vampire books is pretty lame sauce. Besides, Alex knows better. He is living in the home of the busiest woman I know and she has read the books in question. Waytogo, you guys. Haley, you need a puppy to catch up. hahahaee.

I don't think Haley needs a puppy, apparently she has Allison biting her ankles.

I too am curious about the Dodge Stratus reference. I figured it was some sort of quote I am not privy to.

I am going to bet that it's a reference to that SNL skit where Will Ferrell is the dad (who keeps mentioning that he drives a Dodge Stratus) and they're all fighting about how each one of them is busier than the next. But shout out to the moms in our lives! Mom's day is coming up, and I'm hoping and praying that being a mother makes you naturally more energetic (haha, yeah right). I've got a 27 year old who keeps me busy enough, but he doesn't often bite my ankles. I don't have the energy/brain capacity to comment on anything about Twilight, but I love you all, and yay for blogs!

Haley said...

Haha yeah the Dodge Stratus is definitely a Will Farrell shoutout. I just felt like Alex was saying that we don't do anything so we were just letting him know that we most certainly do. And I am not getting a puppy for at least 10 years. Seriously.Yes, Allison bites me enough as it is! And we won't have a yard for at least 10 years.

Thanks for havin my back there Aimes. I put on the big tough cowboy roughneck ain't-skeered-of-nothin facade, but you know me way better than that. Thanks for everything.

The dodge stratus quote was of course a reference to the Will Ferrel SNL skit. I put it in there just for good measure to make it completely clear that I was indeed being jocular.

Fun to share a guilty pleasure with you, Em (and others)?

I've liked the new Glee episodes okay. Not as crazy about the Madonna episode as many fans are, but there were a couple of great numbers for sure, plus one real surprise (for me, anyway).

The other two have been good but mostly for one-liners from Sue and blonde Cheerio Brittany, and they've been concentrating on developing story lines for some of the other characters besides Rachel and Finn, which I think is great. I'm not a huge Kristin Chenowith fan, so the most recent one was not such a great treat for me even though I liked where the stories of these other characters are developing.

As of now, I have watched every single episode of Glee, even the new ones! I admit, I got a little hooked, too. I agree, Dan, the one-liners from Sue are the best. My favorite was something about the smell of cookies wafting from the ovens that the elves are making in Will's hair. She's hilarious.
Busy-ham Lincoln, huh? That's funny. I guess I'm not too busy to watch Glee and read Twilight, though.

I just found out that they are going ahead with the Breaking Dawn movie! Bill Condon will be directing it. This will be a toughie but I am so interested to see how they do it!
