After gushing about Toby Stephens in Jane Eyre on my personal blog yesterday, I was lying in bed in the wee hours of the morning with a unsleepy Elinore beside me thinking about other possibly awesome performances. So I thought it was due time to bring back the KWAW top 5s.
So this is a top 5 list of the actors you think really brought a book character to life, better then you even imagined they were on page. Actors that not only embodied, but enriched the character in your head, totally making it their own.
So here is mine:
1. Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter in Silence of the Lambs.
2. Vivian Leigh as Scarlett O'Hara in Gone With the Wind.
3. Toby Stephens as Edward Rochester in Jane Eyre.
4. Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch in To Kill A Mockingbird.
5. Hugh Grant as Will in About A Boy.
I struggled putting Hugh Grant up there, but in the end I just had to. His portrayal of Will in that movie was SO entertaining. I really enjoyed his performance and this movie made me like the book a whole lot more then I had before, so I am putting him up there. I don't think I need to explain any of the others.

Okay, Ems, I am going to take a shot at this as I have not much else to do while waiting for the stupid late airplane to get here from Denver.
First: Peter O'Toole as T.E. Lawrence in Lawrence of Arabia. The best acting job, ever! But I didn't read the book so I can't count it. Disregard!!
I totally agree on Anthony Hopkins as Dr. Lecter and Greg Peck as Atticus. They would be on my 5 tops performanaces. In random order:
1. Al Pacino as Michael Corleone in the Godfather. Yes, I read the book by Puzo as I did all the below:
2. Paul Scofield as Sir Thomas More in A Man For All Seasons. A true thinking person movie and great job by all.
3. Jack Nicholson as McMurphy in One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest. Need I say more?
4. Alec Guinness as the prisoner's leader in The Bridge On the River Kwai. Older movie but awesome and you all should see it.
5. Charlton Heston as Judah Ben Hur in Ben Hur. Good job by 'ol Moses in a great movie. By the way, I read both Ben Hur and A Bridge on the Rive Kwai in Spanish and English. Late in my mission I read a few novels for spanish practice. The Bridge book was really a chore in spanish as the vocabauly words were so different because of the jungle, asian setting.
After this, Emily, if this gets some action from the peeps, we could do the opposit. Movies that the actors really dissipointed us by their work in movies from books. I have thought of a few of those while thinking about this one.
Brad Pitt as Tyler Durden in 'Fight Club' was perfection.
Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice.
