Sunday's With Sue

Footloose! Kick off your Sunday shoes! (oh man that was cheesey!) Yes, a movie all us Utahn's must love. And all of us Springville High alumni must love because it was filmed at Payson High which is exactly the same as Springville High. I did like this movie back in the day, but I watched about half an hour of it a few months ago on cable and thought, man this is kind of lame. And it doesn't help that Cam's niece, Melanie, was in 2 seperate productions of it in less than a year and we went to both! So I am Footloosed out!

I had a lot of wrong guesses with this one at first! Dad and Amy both guessed Caddyshack, Cat guessed Annie Hall and Em guessed Blades of Glory. All of those guesses made sense to me, so it shows you guys were thinking. But Dan was first to get it right! And I don't know if you read the comments Dan, but the consensus is that spousal help is okay. (sorry Cat) Cat was 2nd to get it right, then Dad, then Em, then B. I cannot believe Amy didn't get this one! How many songs did your drill team do dances to from this soundtrack? Anyway, way to go Dan. Welcome to the blog and way to kick everyone's butts.

Here is this week's movie quote:

"On behalf of the entire South Carolina law enforcement community, I would like to offer our heartfelt apologies for any pain or temporary inconvenience we may have caused you."

And as a quick sidenote, I'd like to say I had such a great weekend! Booker stayed with us, and we always love having him here. It makes me sad to think that in a few years he will be a teenager and probably won't want to spend weekends at Aunt Sue's. And then, to make it even better, Emily and Scout came over this afternoon so Em could show me Ipod tricks. And while they were here, Cat and Travis came over to get Booker. So all the Utah peeps were at my house today! (except Rob, he was napping and watching games).

Thanks for helping with the puzzle Em! Look I finished it!

But not without help from Pedro and Tosh.

Hooray Dan! (For getting it instead of Matt, I'm going to need such help until my brain is back in tip top shape.)

Good job Sue! That's a fun puzzle and has given me a puzzle bug that must be assuaged. For the record, my contributions were: Dr. Strange Pork, Dr. Teeth, Floyd, Swedish Chef's hat, other pig in space dude and Dr. Honeydew's glasses. Boy, I took care of all the muppet doctors didn't I?

Dan W said...

Thanks! Pure luck in that I'm married to an unabashed Footloosian (except she hates the Lori Singer character). Kevin Bacon can still do no wrong for her. I hardly remember any details from the movie except that I thought Sarah Jessica Parker was cute back then whereas I'm not such a fan now. And I will also admit that I will occasionally think of this movie as I pass by the Lehi Roller Mills.

Can anyone think of the other movie that was filmed in Utah I'm guessing right about this era and actually had a couple of guys from the old Mapleton singles ward in it? My line hint from the movie: "cleansing bubble"

Pops said...

Nice work, Dan on Footloose. How about Fletch having some scenes filmed in Utah County. "cleansing bubble" rings no bells or bubbles. I am a kevin Bacon fan. A Few Good Men, Tremors, Apollo 13 etc.

Cat said...

I love Kevin Bacon! Sue, that's the cutest puzzle in the world. You have to let me borrow it.

Dan W said...

I'm not trying to take over Sue's game here with doing hints, I promise! Just a movie that I hadn't thought about in years but was reminded of by Footloose and the Utah connection.

Not Fletch. Smaller budget for sure. Hint for George: The cleansing bubble scene takes place in a high school bathroom. (And B, the subject involved in the scene may be on the edge a bit for you, but it's not a gross-out scene at all, mostly just funny.)

Speaking of "cleansing," my verification word is "slysol" (reminding me of Lysol)...

Sue said...

I like Kevin Bacon too. Mystic River is one of my favorite movies.

I can't think of the movie you're referring too Dan. I'll have to think about it. And I don't care if you want to throw in some trivia, it's great! I love trivia.

Dan W said...

Just thought of something else about the mystery film that might drive George even crazier if he can't get it: I'm pretty sure it also featured (I think in a non-speaking role but in a scene that's pretty important) a former BYU football player from the era when you had season tickets...

And, everyone, I'd be surprised if anyone besides George or perhaps Amy might get this. Pretty obscure movie that I just can't see coming into anyone's consciousness beyond just those in Utah around this time or perhaps for fans of one actor and one actress who were popular a while back but have faded big time.

Sue said...

You can borrow the puzzle anytime. I love it, and it is fun to do.

Em, didn't you do the big bear too?

Sue said...

I know you did the bear. Remember you needed the piece that looked like a bum?

Haley said...

Now I know why those lines didn't sound familiar to me, I have never seen Footloose! I keep meaning to but never have.

Emily said...

Yes, I did the bear, in fact I was unable to leave until I found that last piece. So add that to my list.
I don't know what movie you are talking about Dan, but I would be surprised if I have never heard of it, especially if it's name floated around my house at it's release time. I will be interested to see what it is.

Sue said...

I can't believe you've never seen Footloose Haley! I assumed that movie would have been in the Phister movie library for years! This doesn't mean that we will watch this movie next time we are all together.

Em, I'm downloading the Wait Wait Don't Tell Me podcast from last week and I'm going to put it on my little Ipod! I'm so excited! I'm going to listen to it while I do some grocery shopping. Thanks again for giving that to me. And I think you're right. After I have it for a little while I'm going to wonder how I lived without one.

Dan W said...

Wow, fun on getting an iPod, Sue! My experience was exactly what you're imagining: how did I live so long without it? (I've had mine now for about 2.5 years--a totally shocking birthday gift from Jeanine the generous)

After an initial blitz of subscribing to too many podcasts at first, I'm now down to several favorites (including This American Life, which I think I gathered from somewhere is a favorite show of yours?). I also have about thirty audio books on it, which is so handy. Then music for all occasions, of course!

Tell me, anyone, when you are ready for another hint on my mystery Utah-filmed movie...

Amy said...

I'm stumped on your movie, Dan. Is Jim McMahon in it? Seems familiar but I'm not close. I was a big fan of Footloose. It came out my senior year of HS so naturally, it was a big hit. Loved Kevin Bacon. He was really cute in it. I still like him. But NO drill team routines were done to any Footloose songs. Can you believe it?!! Flashdance, now there's another story. I can't believe Haley hasn't seen it either! I picked it up maybe a year or two and we watched it again with very high expectations, and have to admit, I was disappointed and a little embarrassed.

I don't know if another hint will help, Dan, but I'm ready.

Dan W said...

Hint: A whole generation of guys had a crush on the lead actress who was a girl-next-door type. Her initials are MM. The lead actor's initials are LL.

Sue said...

I thought you guys did a dance to that I need a Hero song.

Was the actress Maureen McCormick? Marilyn Monroe? Minnie Mouse?

Dan W said...

Yes.

Forgot to say no earlier on Jim McMahon to Amy's query. A far more obscure BYU football player. A defensive lineman who, interestingly, also has the initials MM, IIRC

Amy said...

Was that a yes on one of Sue's guesses? I wonder which one....I still don't know the movie.

I don't remember a dance to Hero. But I am getting pretty old, you know. I totally should have guessed Footloose! I knew the "make-out like crazy" line was really familiar. Dang

Cat said...

I'm going with Maureen McCormick. No clue what the movie is though.

Dan W said...

The movie centered on a wrestling team, and the title is a wrestling term....

And the MM is indeed Marsha Brady herself, Maurine McCormick.

The other MM, the BYU football player in a pivotal scene, is Bronco Mendenhall's brother, Mat (who actually isn't that obscure as he played some pro football, I believe).

Emily said...

Is she like on the wrestling team in her high school or something?

Dan W said...

Funny guess. Nope, not it. A far more typical supportive-girlfriend- of-the-troubled-star-athlete role. Overall a very predictable movie--its Mormon director (and maybe writer even) is, I'm almost sure, also the director of the movie Testaments (at the Joseph Smith Building).

Come on, George. You gotta know it!

Haley said...

Yeah, I need to see it sometime. I don't understand everyone's thinking that Kevin Bacon is cute or good looking in anyway. He is so not!! He looks like he just walked off a trailer park in Arkansas.

Pops said...

Yeah, I get got on all this. Been working and now the plane is late from Denver and I checking out the blog and email jumk. Dan's movie is really a streach and must go back to the early 80's. It's a Keith Merrill movie called Down. Put Down or Smack down or something. (Can't be Smack down as that word wasn't in the vocab. in those years.) Hud sauce because I don't remember much of it.

B said...

When Matt and I watched Footloose, he asked me if I thought Kevin Bacon was cute. I think Kevin looks like Lee's (my mom's boyfriend) younger cousin. Matt said "Yeah he is, isn't he? You don't think he's cute." He assumed Kevin was a heartthrob, but I agree with Haley on this one. Funny thing. But Tremors was one of my favorite movies growing up. We should watch that next time you guys come up!

Dan W said...

Close enough. It's called Take Down. Lorenzo Lamas with Maureen McCormick, also Edward Herrman as the teacher who becomes the reluctant wrestling coach. Mat Mendenhall, the BYU player, played the undefeated state champion wrestler who our hero must defeat in the finals. The two former Mapleton singles ward fellows in it were twin brothers who I believe were named Leavitt. They were excellent wrestlers in h.s., I guess, so they were used (only really seen in scenes of practice and meets and scans of the team during locker room talks, etc.) Anyway, after getting to know them, it was fun to rewatch the movie a few years after it came out.

The cleansing bubble scene comes as one of the wrestlers has to lose four more ounces to make weight and has only a few minutes to do it. So he heads to the bathroom where the coach soon joins him and starts an improvised meditation exercise telling him to imagine a cleansing bubble going through his system and then finding its way out. Shortly afterward, we hear a flush (sorry B!) and the wrestler makes his weight.

I'm sure the movie is hud sauce but I was still a bit crushy on Ms McCormick then (just looked up film date, and it was 1978) so who cares about "good"--plus it had the local connection, so it is a fun memory.

So Amy or Emily or anyone else. Have you even heard of this film?

Pops said...

"Tremors" was so chezzy and silly but compelling and I watch it often on cable. Reba McIntire and her partner with all the guns and bombs were so bad. The big worms ruled! Kevin Bacon was lame also. I still like him, especially in a Marine winter uniform. Classy and not even close to looking like Lee the Nail Head.

Dan W said...

So no for several of you on Kevin Bacon.... What do you think of his wife Kyra Sydgwick. I am trying to convince my wife that she's great looking but Lorri's not buying it. (She's in one of my favorite movies, Phenomenon, so perhaps that colors my perception, but I think Lorri's got a warped perspective because we only see her these days in The Closer, in which her character wears terrible make-up).

Pops said...

"Take Down" Yep. Goes back a ways even for me. Good job, Dan. By the way, Dan, have you gone way back in the blog and read old postings? There are some real funny stuff in the old ones. About movies and quotes and family stories. Take the time sometime to read. You might be supprised to see how smart Sue, Emily and Catherine are....I was...

Sue said...

That's funny, I was just kidding with Maureen McCormick! And Lorenzo Lamas? Good Lord, he had the best 80's hair in that show, Renegade? Now there is a one hit wonder! Didn't he have a song in the 80's as well?

I definitely wouldn't call Kevin Bacon a "heart throb", but there is something kind of cute about him. I think it is his smile. As for his wife, I'm kind of ify on her. She is interesting looking that's for sure. Cam thinks she looks like an alien, he can't even look at her, and for some reason I kind of defend her. I never saw Phenomenon, so I must have seen her in something I liked. I don't know what it is. I agree though, she looks hideous in The Closer. I've only seen the commercials for that show. But what happened? Just bad aging or bad cosmetic surgery?

Emily said...

Most likely though Dan, you will gain more insight on what a shocking Uncle you have (I say MORE insight, for I'm sure you have some idea already).

Never heard of the movie, had I known it was '78, I doubt I would have made the claim I did. My awareness of pop culture especially what the family talked about starts with the first house on Quiet Meadow, but mostly the Springville house. That would put us at '80 or '81. Funny little barely related antidote: When Material Girl hit the airwaves, I thought Madonna was saying she was a Cheerio Girl and I pictured her wearing a bright yellow Cheerio shirt as she sang.

My Kevin Bacon thoughts: I seem to be closely related to Sue's school of thought. Something kind of cute about him, certainly not drop dead handsome, but he has a nice charm and fits into his character's skin well. He always seems well cast, so I'd say he is a good actor and I actually just watched Mystic River last night. I also like his wife, she delivers a great Southern Charm persona to her characters and has an interesting face. Huh, Kevin has an interesting face too. Do they have kids? Because I am guessing they are interesting.

I am also a big A Few Good Men fan. I am a SUCKER for a good courtroom movie. This one is one of my favorite lazy/rainy/sick/what have you middle of the day, lounging around movie to watch. I can even stand Cruise in it. We should do a top five list of those! I know we all have them and we haven't done a top 5 in a while.

Pops said...

I have liked Kyra Sydgwick because she was in ..crap! what was the name? One of my favs. Robert Downey Jr. E. Shue, Sizemore, Charles Groden (singing the National anthem) They were all killed on a bus and stuck in the Neither world...anyway a fun movie and the first one I remember Sydgwick being in and also because of Phenomonum (sp) which I liked. It's the *@#$*& getting old and having your mind lock up. Help me someone with the name of that movie.

Pops said...

"Shocking Uncle" Ems? Are you refering to me? Couldn't possibly be yo!

Amy said...

Dad, I think you're thinking of "Heart and Souls". Good memories of the "Walk Like a Man" song. My girls LOVED that song. I feel exactly the same about Kevin Bacon and his wife as Sue and Em. I think Kyra is pretty cute and interesting, too. I liked Phenomenon.
Has anyone seen the new HBO movie Kevin Bacon stars in called "Taking Chance"? He plays a guy in the military who is assigned to escort the body of a slain soldier killed in Iraq home to Dubois, Wyoming. True story and has made pretty big news here, since Dubois in about an hour away from us. The soldier's first name was Chance. I have'nt seen it yet, but I want to. It looks really good.

Dan W said...

You beat me to the punch by just a minute with Heart and Souls, Amy! I liked that film, as well, George.

YES, see Taking Chance. It is really moving--not really much plot at all but simply from start to finish how soldier's bodies are handled--with the utmost respect, incredibly so--from when they are killed all the way through the trips home. Lorri and I were in tears pretty much from start to finish.

I think Kyra has actually aged pretty well. It's just her character in The Closer is an eccentric who is clueless about a lot of things, including make-up--hence the orange lipstick, etc. Kyra cleans up nice, though, in real life. As Emily says, she is "interesting" looking. I dig that.

Whoever hasn't seen Phenomenon should. It's really a sweet movie that portrays wonderful friendships and also has a fun take on paranormal abilities and human potential. Great music, too. Eric Clapton's "If I Could Change the World," plus great versions of the Van Morrison song "Crazy Love" (done by Aaron Neville) and John Hiatt's "Have a Little Faith in Me" (performed by Jewel).

Amy said...

Yes, I agree with the music. We actually have the sound track and it was played often at our house.

Pops said...

Yeah, Heart & Soles hehehe. Thanks guys. I was going to say the same as Dan about seeing "Phenom." Travolta is really likeable and its a fun story except he croaks, but Robert Duvall is in it and that is so good, so good. I to want to see Taking Chance and Kevin Bacon is a Marine in that also. My w.v. is "ovenzi" haha Oven Nazi That is me and mom wants me to put a meat loaf in this afternoon

Amy said...

I barely remember the movie "Take Down". Never saw and never would have thought of it. Scott was trying to help me last night when I gave him some clues. he couldn't get it either. I'm sure he'll remember when I tell him.
Enjoy the meat loaf Dad.

Emily said...

Ah meatloaf. I like meatloaf, but Rob does not, therefore I never get to make it. Good comfort food. Darn his mom and her horrid cooking skills! They ruined him for a few homey foods.

Dan W said...

Meat Loaf the performer is awesome. Meatloaf the food.... I'm with Rob on that one!

Cat said...

I love meat loaf. I have a really good recipe that has a sweet and sour glace you pour over it. Alton Brown makes a really intriguing one too. Might have to try that some day.

Haley said...

Yuck on meatloaf...YAY for Heart and Souls and Phenomenon! Two of my favorite movies ever! You never really forget your first crush...(John Travolta). Haha.

Sue said...

Yay to meatloaf! That is strange to me that some people don't like it. Cam and I make it out of ground turkey, it's yummy.

I have never even heard of the movie Heart and Souls, weird. You all seem to love it so much!

Cat said...

Heart and Souls is great! Walk like a man!!

Sue said...

I just went onto IMDB and looked up Heart and Souls, I've definitely never seen it. Doesn't look familiar at all! Cat, I watched Milk last night. That is the best movie! Sean Penn is so amazing he blows my mind. And Harvey Milk is such a likeable and charasmatic guy, it is so sad what happened to him. You need to see it.

Emily said...

I used to love that movie! It's kind of fun, haven't seen it in years but I do LOVE Robert Downey, jr. That guy has a really unique and awesome acting style. I am curious to see it again to see if I now find it gay. Anyone seen it recently?

Cat said...

Oh, I know. I want to see Milk so bad. My boss was just telling me last night about how great it is and have Kleenex handy.

Sue said...

I didn't need any kleenex, but it is very sad. Sean Penn is just the best. I was pulling for Richard Jenkins to win the oscar because I loved The Visitors so much, but now I'm really glad Penn won. He totally deserved it!

Amy said...

Some night when Annie & I are home alone I will make meatloaf. She's the only one who likes it so I don't make it much either. I love Meatloaf the singer too. Sarah gave me his greatest hits CD a couple of years ago for my birthday. I haven't seen Heart & Souls for a long time. I was thinking Kyle might like it, I'll have to look for it.

Haley said...

It's an awesome movie, I love it! Walk Like a Man is the best! I just discovered Marcus has never seen and now I want him to. If you find it mom, you should bring it to Idaho with you when you come! Yay only a few more weeks!

Pops said...

I have a copy of Heart and Souls in VHF. Kyle will love most of it. Growing up as a kid with these four adult friends being with him and then they dissapear and reapear later in life....classic. Funny how something like meatloaf can spur so much comments. Yous guys are wonderful. Two and a half days off because I worked the weekend. Yeah!! I am helping Matt transfer 8mm movies to DVD. Can't wait to see the Happy birthday posting for Mom. Go Team!

Sue said...

Dad you should send me some things that mom likes, you know her best! It's fun to put things that no one else would think about, or something from a long time ago that the birthday person wouldn't think of. Like Where the Red Fern Grows for Amy.

I'm still puzzled on why so many people hate meatloaf! What's wrong with you? And where has Matt been lately? Is he really busy or something?

B said...

Crazy times at the Matt Wright house. Matt likes meatloaf, one of the few foods he likes with ketchup (that and pot roast, which I still find wierd). And I think meatloaf is one of the best comfort foods, with cheddar cheese melted on top and ketchup. Wish I knew how to make it. I've had a sore throat for a month, and it's Spring Break this week, so Matt's been taking care of me, and also Matt has a Wii Dr. Mario addiction that he's been feeding. So that has stolen him away from his sisters...and his sleep... and his wife on Valentines Day... Utah is going to be GREAT!!

Hehe, my word verification is Rernna. Is that me as Rarnee's wife? Haha!!

Sue said...

Rernna! That's great, I think that should be your nickname!

Sorry, I forgot to do the Wednesday hint yesterday. I knew this one was going to be tough! Here is the hint quote:

Person #1- Have you ever been to....Santiago, Chile?

Person #2- Twice last year! Which building's yours?

Haley said...

I have never seen this movie, I know it.

Sue said...

Looks like you guys need a Friday quote! Here it is:

Have you ever had a whitehead on your eyeball?

Emily said...

I am close, I tell you I'm close. The Wed hint is the only really familiar one, but I am getting there with it. Just need a little more stewing time.
